The Crandall Independent School District placed their schools on precautionary lockdown on Tuesday, April 9, 2013, for a short period of time.
The Kaufman County Sheriff's Office received a call regarding a single gunshot that was heard on FM 1389 in Combine, Texas, at 1:01 p.m. According to Lt. Lewis with KCSO, officers with the Combine Police Department were on the scene of the alleged shot fired in less than a minute.
“There is nothing to indicate that a gun was fired other than the caller who was reporting that they heard what sounded like a gunshot and saw a vehicle driving down the road in the area,” stated a release with the Sheriff's Office. Authorities further investigated the report and cleared the scene a short time later. Another officer in the area stated they did not hear a gunshot at the time of the report.
Crandall ISD was initially placed on a full lockdown on the recommendation of Crandall Police Chief Winters. The lockdown has been lifted but a “soft” lockdown will remain in effect until school is released.
An official press release was prompted after various rumors quickly circulated on social media. According to Kaufman County Sheriff's Office, “None of these reports are true. There has been no shooting and all county officials are accounted for.”
