The businesses were operating “8 liner type gambling/gaming devices,” according to Terrell Police Department Captian A.D. Sansom. The Terrell Police Department executed the search warrants at Terrell Quick Stop at 300 East Moore Avenue and seized four motherboards, cash boxes, and $2,097; Country Boys Market Shell at 100 First Street and seized five motherboards, cash boxes, and $1,103; D&M Mart Convenience Store at 305 9th Street and seized six motherboards, cash boxes, and $362; and 747 Water Mart at 307 9th Street and seized two motherboards, cash boxes, and $594.
“Investigators investigated these establishments and determined that they were either paying out cash or store credit 'vouchers' [same as cash] to winning participants of these illegal machines,” said Captain A.D. Sansom with the Terrell Police Department. “Any payout whether it be cash, store credit, or merchandise is illegal and will be investigated and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”
Arrest warrants are forthcoming according to Sansom and any business owner operating illegal gaming equipment in their establishment will be charged with “keeping a gaming place”, a class A misdemeanor. The clerk or attendant who pays out the winnings will be charged with “gambling promotion”, also a class A misdemeanor.
