Terrell, Texas – The Terrell ISD Board of Trustees announced the hiring of Athletic Director Buster Leaf and Head Football Coach Mike Shields on Monday night, December 16, 2013, which ends the search to fill former Head Coach and Athletic Director Kevin Wilson's seat after his resignation at the end of the 2013-14 school year.

Together, Leaf and Shields bring 60 years of coaching experience to Terrell ISD, according to a TISD press release. Both are expected to begin at Terrell ISD on January 6, 2014.
“These two men are extraordinary leaders, coaches, and most importantly citizens of character,” Superintendent Micheal French said. “I am confident that Coach Leaf will lead our athletic programs in the right direction, and that Coach Shields will build an incredible football program. We are proud to have them join our Tiger Team.”
Coach Shields, a Baylor University graduate, previously coached District 15-4A Red Oak High School and led them to an overall 4-6 season for 2013-14. In the 2012-13 season, Red Oak finished 2nd in district with an overall record of 9-4 for the season. Red Oak advanced to the regional playoffs in the 2012-13 season, only two games away from a state championship bid, and ultimately lost to Frisco Centennial, 40-14. According to TISD press release, Shields led Red Oak to the playoffs four out of seven seasons.
Coach Leaf was previously an assistant coach at District 6-2A Sunnyvale High School who finshed with an overall 2013-14 season record of 7-3. In total, Leaf has more than 24 years experience as a head coach and athletic director, according to Terrell ISD. Leaf also previously worked for Lewisville ISD and Lubbock ISD.
Coach Shields earned his Bachelor of Science degree at Southeastern Oklahoma State University, where he was a three-year starter and letterman on the football team. Coach Shields earned his Masters of Business Administration degree from Baylor University in 1990.
Coach Leaf earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Sul Ross State University in Alpine, Texas, where he also earned a Master of Education degree.
