The quick-change scam involves an individual or several individuals working as a team who confuse cashiers by paying for small purchases with a large denomination bill and requesting change in certain denominations. The scamming individual will then quickly change their mind several times on how they want the change returned.
The Forney Police Department said as much as $200 has already been scammed from local businesses including Sweet Frog on Farm-to-Market (FM) 548.
Experts say you can avoid becoming a victim by laying the individual's money on the register in front of you and concentrating on returning the correct amount of change. No matter how many times the individual changes their mind and requests different denominations, keep the change and the individual's money separate and only return their money if you have received the correct amount of change back.
Cashiers should also slowly count the money aloud back to the individual and do not let them reach for the change before you have correctly counted and handed it to them. Money should only be placed back in the register when the correct change has been made.
If you have any information on the individuals in the video below, contact the Criminal Investigations Division of the Forney Police Department at (972) 564-7600. Also, if you have been a victim of the quick-change scam, contact the police department.
