FORNEY, Texas – The Forney High School girls soccer team became the Forney Independent School District's first soccer team to ever win a sectional round playoff game, according to FISD Athletic Director Neal Weaver, after their 2-1 win over Wylie at Mesquite's Hanby Stadium on Friday night, April 4, 2014.

The Forney High School boys team may become the second team to also win a sectional round playoff match if they defeat Dallas Molina tonight at Wylie Stadium.
The girls 4A Region II match was an extremely aggressive and physical game as both teams fought for ball control, determined to score the first goal. Forney's Caylon McMillan and Wylie's Chole Jackson showed exceptional ball control throughout the match.
In the first half, both teams had several shots on goal including a shot from both teams that dinged of the top goal post. Forney picked up momentum in the final minutes of the first half and drilled several shots from outside the goal box but were unable to put them in the net.
The first half ended with neither team able to score, 0-0.
Within minutes of the second half starting, Forney's Mason Richardson scored the first goal of the game to put Forney up 1-0 over Wylie. Forney's Gabbie Gleaves was injured during the exchange in Wylie's goal box and subbed out.
Wylie's Alex O'Steen threatened the goal several times on her signature 30 to 40-yard throw-ins and kept Forney's goalkeeper Autumn Smith busy.
Wylie scored an equalizer with 16:32 remaining in the game to tie the score at 1-1. An O'Steen throw-in assisted the header goal by Wylie's Abby Ostream. Both teams were visibly tired at this point and gave away a couple free kicks on both sides of the ball.
It wasn't until the final four minutes of the game Forney capitalized on a corner kick. The corner kick crossed the field and was cleared by a Wylie defender but was put back into play by a Forney defender near half field. Mason Davis dribbled the ball between a pair of defenders and broke loose in the goal box and fired off a shot on the keeper's far side. The ball rolled in with Forney's Kayleigh Phillips walking the ball into the net with 3:44 remaining in the game.
Wylie's final unsuccessful attempt at the goal in the final seconds of the game finalized the score, Forney 2, Wylie 1.
"That second goal was a key moment for the girls," said Head Coach Trisha Williams. "We dropped our forwards back after that to try and hold them off."
Forney will advance to a Class 4A Regional Quarterfinals matchup next week on either Monday or Tuesday against Highland Park who defeated Frisco tonight. That game will be played at a mutual site determined by the coaches.
The winner of the regional quarterfinals advances to the Final Four at the Regional Championship Tournament at Standbridge Stadium in Carrollton, Texas, to be played on April 11-12.
