North Forney FFA wraps up their 2013-14 season
FORNEY, Texas – The 2013-14 North Forney High School FFA Show Team recently wrapped up their show season last month at the Kaufman County Junior Livestock Show and “they have a lot to be proud of,” said FFA Booster Club President Wendy Willey.

Their season began last summer when most high school aged kids are out with friends and on family vacations. “But for the members of the North Forney FFA Show Team, summer is full of early mornings, long days, and late nights with their animals, every day. This kind of commitment and dedication is what helped to make this group of kids successful this show season,” said Wiley.

Under the direction of Ag instructor Mrs. Hoggatt, the North Forney FFA Show Team competed in the following shows: The East Texas State Fair in Tyler, Texas; the State Fair of Texas in Dallas, Texas; the Houston Livestock Show Calf Scramble Progress Show in Humble, Texas; the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo in Fort Worth, Texas; the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo in Houston, Texas; and the Kaufman County Jr. Livestock Show in Kaufman, Texas.

At the East Texas State Fair, which was the first show of the season for heifers and steers, the team received several top accolades including: Marilyn Grubaugh who placed 2nd with her Braham heifer; Stephanie Willey who placed 3rd with her Beefmaster heifer; and Emily Willey who placed 4th with her American Breed steer and 5th with her Beefmaster heifer.

Stephanie Willey placed 3rd with her American Breed steer at the State Fair of Texas. Other team members who participated in the show include: Emily Willey, Stephanie Willey, and Marilyn Grubaugh in various heifer shows; and Calton Pritchett and Coby Pritchett in the swine show.

Stephanie Willey also participated in the Houston Livestock Show's Calf Scramble Progress Show which allows winners of the Calf Scramble to show the heifer they purchased with the scramble winnings. Stephanie Willey also attended several seminars to improve showmanship and nutrition of her animals. Her American Breed Beefmaster heifer placed 6th at this show.

At the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo, several students placed well and Emily Willey was chosen to compete for 10 Scholarships given by the Heifer Superintendents Committee. To qualify for this scholarship opportunity, Emily Willey had to show her heifer the past two years at the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo, be a senior in high school, and ultimately be selected by the committee. 75 students from across Texas were selected.

Also, these students had showings at the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo: Emily Willey, Beefmaster heifer; Stephanie Willey, Beefmaster heifer; Emily Willey, American Breed steer; Junior FFA member Ty Barber, lamb; Cheyenne Mayfield, lamb; Katie Henderson, goat; Cheyenne Stone, goat; and Madalyn Seigmund, goat.

The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo was the first time the North Forney FFA's Poultry Team participated in a major show, according to Willey. “This show proved to be the most challenging for all those who attended with many of the team members staying awake for 40 plus hours during the first few days they were in Houston, said Willey.

Stephanie Willey placed 4th with her American Breed heifer. Other Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo participants include: Emily Willey, cockrell pen and Beefmaster heifer; Calton Pritchett, cockrell pen and swine; Coby Pritchett, cockrell pen, swine, and Calf Scramble participant; Junior FFA member Ryleigh Coffelt, pullett pen; Marilyn Grubaugh, Brahman heifer; Katie Henderson, goat; and Cheyenne Stone, goat.

The North Forney FFA Show Team concluded their show season at the Kaufman County Junior Livestock Show with 26 students participating. “We are very proud of how hard all these kids have worked over the school year,” said Willey. “With the help of parents, friends, and family, this years’ show season was an overall success.”

Daniel Wilcox became the first North Forney FFA member to become a scholarship winner at the Kaufman County Junior Livestock Show. The North Forney FFA Swine Show Team also won 1st place in herdsmanship.

In the heifer show, Stephanie Willey placed 1st with her Beefmaster heifer, Tanner Cole placed 1st with his Brangus heifer, Emily Willey placed 3rd with her Beefmaster heifer, Marilyn Grubaugh placed 2nd with her Brahman heifer, and Kennedy Searles with her Santa Gertrudis heifer.
