An appointment was expected this morning as Cooper's current two-year term was set to expire. However, allegations against Cooper have prompted an investigation by the Texas Rangers. Cooper's full appointment will likely be determined by the findings of that investigation – the details of which are not being released at this time.
County officials are expected to release additional information concerning the investigation early next week.
The miscellaneous order entered April 10, 2014:
The District Judges, having the duty to appoint the County Auditor pursuant to Texas Local Government Code §84.002, and not having completed the investigation and consideration required by §84.006(b), hereby authorize Karen Cooper to serve as Acting County Auditor for a period of thirty days from the expiration of her current term of office or until such time as the District Court Judges shall appoint a County Auditor pursuant to §84.003 for the next two-year term.
