Arbor Day Foundation and Oncor to give away 8,000 trees – first come, first-served
FORNEY, Texas – The Energy-Saving Trees program, a partnership with Oncor and the Arbor Day Foundation, will be giving away 8,000 trees to Oncor service territory customers on a first-come, first-served basis, Oncor announced today.

Oncor service customers in Forney and the surrounding service areas are eligible for the placement of up to two trees by filling out an online form at arborday.org/oncor. The online form will ask for your address and will verify your eligibility. You will then be asked to map out your property and the program will show you the best place to plant the trees.

“The program is designed to promote energy conservation by educating customers on the best places to plant trees to lower heating costs in the winter and cooling costs in the summer while avoiding power lines,” according to an Oncor release earlier today.

Six different tree species native to Texas are available and include Burr Oak, Cedar Elm, Chinkapin Oak, Mexican White Oak, Pecan, and Texas Redbud.

“It’s always a great opportunity when we can help educate folks. In this case, providing trees and teaching our customers how to plant them in harmony with our power lines,” Oncor Vice President of Distribution Operations Keith Hull stated in the release. “It’s the best of both worlds – the conservation that residents want and need, as well as the clearance we need for our electric facilities.”

According to Oncor, trees around homes will not only help reduce the amount of energy your home requires, but they also add to your property value, reduce your carbon footprint, improve the air quality, and more effectively catch storm-water runoff.

The trees will be delivered to your home at the address entered on the online form after the order has been placed, according to an Oncor spokesperson Kris Spears. The trees are two to three feet tall at the time of delivery and come with follow-up instructions on planting the tree with the best placement, he said.

“It is our intention that the free trees we provide be a gift to you and your community,” states the release.
