Forney City Council race: Candidates vie for votes at Meet the Candidate Night
Meet the Candidate Night, sponsored by the Forney Chamber of Commerce, was held on Thursday, April 25 in the Forney High School cafeteria. City Council candidates had the opportunity to introduce themselves to voters and to state their positions on local issues.

Ray Stephens- Running Unopposed for Place 2 City Council

Ray Stephens served on the EDC Board and then applied for and was appointed in 2012 to take the seat of Brian Haughey who stepped down from the City Council. He is a a decorated, retired United States Marine who currently works in the “fire protection industry.” Mr. Stephens is also an Adjutant Professor of Emergency Disaster Management and Homeland Security with Central Texas College and Trinity Valley Community College.

Stephens said, “When I make a decision, I do it from the bottom of my heart. I don't let any group pressure me, I do what I think is right for this community...I do want your vote, but I won't sell my soul for your vote.” He spoke of his desire to help grow and develop downtown Forney, saying “I support revitalizing downtown.” He said he wants to help guide the city and will represent the whole community. He voiced his strong support for the apartments being built near FM 548 on the north side of Highway 80.

Scott Regan vs Incumbent James Hatley- Place 4 City Council

Scott Regan was raised in Terrell and graduated from Texas Tech University in 1997. He works for a contract management company. He serves on the Forney EDC Board and feels that his experience in managing millions of dollars for his job can be beneficial to the City.

He vowed to represent the masses and not individual agendas if he is elected. In response to a question about the formerly proposed $2 million EDC Bond to revitalize downtown, Regan said, “When we talk about debt we have to be very strategic in our approach. The burden of debt, as anyone knows, can be very impactful to an individual or...to a city.” As a member of the EDC Board, Regan made a motion to approve an amended spending list for the bond and voted to approve the bond measure.

When asked how he feels the proposed apartment complex will affect the City of Forney, Regan said that he spoke with many Diamond Creek residents who are worried about the apartments close to their sub-division. He said that he spoke with leaders in other cities and was told they wished they had held off on approving apartments and reassessed what the long term impact would be. He did not say if he is for or against the apartments.

James Hatley is a fourth generation citizen of Forney and has lived here nearly his entire life. He has served on the Forney EDC Board, the Forney Parks Board, the Forney Planning and Zoning Board, and the Forney Historic Preservation League Board. He was appointed to the City Council in 2001 and was elected to the Council from 2003 to present.

Hatley spoke about the City Council's need to “prepare and plan” and he mentioned the retreats the Council goes on in order to exchange ideas and share visions for the future of Forney. In response to the EDC Bond question, Hatley said, “That money would have allowed us to do a portion of the school property (old First Baptist Church)...I don't think that's going to come in to fruition for us, so we asked the EDC to go back and look it over, a Plan B.” He said it is important to address the needs of downtown and that it will take money to revitalize downtown Forney.

Speaking about the proposed apartment complex in Forney, Hatley said, “The apartment complex is going to be a value to lots of people. It's going to be a value to some of our quality teachers...who don't want to or can't afford to rent or buy a house.” He said it benefits those who want less maintenance than they would have with a house and will be great for the young people who graduate high school and need an apartment to attend local colleges.

Joc Lomax vs Incumbent Andy Parker- Place 6 City Council

Joc Lomax grew up in East Texas and began working in Dallas for the Department of Justice in the IT Department since 1998. He made Forney his home in 2004 and has been active in the Claybon PTO. He is a former member of the EDC Board and is a 2011 graduate of Leadership Forney as well as a 2012 graduate of Leadership Kaufman County.

Lomax says communication is important between the City, FISD, and the Chamber. When asked about the Bond that was passed while he was on the EDC Board, Lomax said “It's a bad idea.” He said he proposed a solution to go through the Main Street program which is through the Governors office. He described it as “free money for downtown redevelopment” and said that is the solution he feels is best for “truly revitalizing downtown.” While on the EDC Board, Lomax missed both meetings in which a vote was held on the bond issue.

To the apartment question Lomax stated that he didn't “know too much about it” but he feels that if the right steps are in place and the right people review the plans and make sure it's beneficial to the City of Forney, then it is “a win situation.” He thinks if it is done in “the right, controlled environment” it is a plus.

Andy Parker was raised on a dairy farm in Marshall, Texas and spent many years in Oklahoma. He graduated from Rice University in 1963 and the University of Texas Law School in 1966. He has lived in Forney since 1996 and has been on the City Council for 10 years. He is a Certified Public Accountant

Parker said this about Forney, “We are a vibrant community, we are a forward looking community. We aren't some sleepy little town on the outskirts of a big city, with no aspirations and no visions. We are looking ahead.” When asked about the relationship between the City of Forney, FISD, and the Chamber of Commerce, Parker said, “I think the relationship has been improving over the last several years. I think Council and in particular, Mayor Rozell, have worked very diligently to try to open lines of communication.”

On the EDC Bond question Parker said he thinks the bond is a good idea. “We need to revitalize our historic downtown. That area represents the roots and anchor of our community, it's our heritage and what sets us apart.” He added, “This is a way to bring life back to our downtown.” As to the apartment complex, he didn't like the visual look of it originally but said that Forney is beginning to run out of land for single family residences. He feels that “upscale apartments are necessary and desirable for the vitality of our community.”

A gunman was killed after being involved in a shootout with Kaufman County Sheriff's Office deputies and DPS state troopers. According to the Sheriff's Office, they received a call around 10:30 a.m. Saturday morning, April 27, of an individual with a gun, shooting, and making threats to residents.

The incident took place minutes east of Terrell, Texas, near County Road 316. When deputies and state troopers arrived, the gunman began shooting at them. Three officers sustained non-life threatening injuries during a scuffle with the suspect, not from gunfire. The unidentified gunman was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities also made an arrest related to the incident, more details may possibly be released tomorrow concerning this arrest. The Texas Rangers are the lead investigators in the shooting.

On April 19, a female teacher at Terrell High School was placed on administrative leave for inappropriate communication with students. On Friday, April 26, a district spokeswoman said that teacher is still under investigation and could not comment on whether or not criminal charges have been filed, citing the ongoing investigation.

A source close to the incident says that the inappropriate communication involves a picture of the teacher. The investigation centers around whether or not the picture was knowingly transferred between the teacher and the student. "Whether or not the picture or pictures were intentionally sent will do little for her career as an educator. Teachers are held accountable for their actions inside and outside of the classroom," said the source who wished to remain anonymous.

“Terrell ISD Administrators and staff are unable to communicate the details of the investigation because it is a personnel matter. However, we do want to guarantee to our parents and students that our Administrators and staff, including the Terrell ISD Police Department are working to ensure the safeguard of our students,” stated a press release from Terrell Independent School District.

The Terrell ISD Police Department is investigating this incident. A letter notifying parents of the incident was sent home with Terrell High School students on April 19.

Forney ISD Board of Trustees' candidates look for election votes
On Thursday, April 25, those living within the boundaries of the Forney Independent School District had the opportunity to meet the FISD Board of Trustees' candidates at Forney High School. The Meet the Candidate Night allowed Keith Bell, Dr. John Taylor, and Kathy Hall to share their backgrounds and why they feel they are the right person to be an FISD Board of Trustees member.

Incumbent David Walker

Though school board incumbent David Walker was unable to attend the event due to being out of town on a business trip, he asked the moderator, Judge Bruce Wood, to read a statement for him. Walker has lived in Forney since 1985 and he is a Senior Principal Engineer. He has a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science and a Master's Degree in Management and Contract Acquisitions. He has served on the Forney ISD School Board since 1998 and has two children who attended Forney schools and are now currently in college.

Walker's statement said, “I truly believe we have great days ahead of us.” He spoke of accomplishments FISD has made and about the “challenging financial time” they are in currently. He stressed that his experience and the “continuity of leadership” on the board should not be underestimated. Walker said they have made “great progress” in dealing with their financial issues and have been able to approve a raise for FISD staff next year.

Challenger Kathy Hall

Kathy Hall moved to Forney with her family 6 years ago. She has a Bachelor's Degree and Master's Degree in Accounting from the University of Mississippi and she is a licensed CPA in the Commonwealth of Virginia. She has worked in four different law firms as the Controller or Director of Finance and has “managed and developed budgets ranging from $25 million to $200 million.” Hall is a PTO member and said she has attended the FISD board meetings for the last year. She said she has “a number of questions as a citizen, as a parent...I have concerns.” She also has a child currently attending a Forney ISD school.

Hall acknowledged the concerns of many parents and FISD staff who are worried about teacher retention, salaries, and the debt the district has accumulated. She praised Superintendent Michael Holland and his administration for doing “a great job” in trying to fix the problems left by the previous superintendent. She would like to see the school district grow and get even better and said, “I would like to be a part of that.”

She was asked what she would do to make sure what happened to the school district in 2011 would never happen again. Hall said, “I would ask questions.” She noted that, in 2008, voters elected to approve a bond to spend nearly $12 million which went for technology infrastructure and e-books and laptops for FISD students. The bond has will take 30 years to pay off — but the e-books will need to be replaced soon. She feels they should have leased the technology so that the e-books and laptops could have been replaced or upgraded every three years. Another example she says, of needing to ask questions before making decisions.

Hall also answered an audience question about whether the school district should be separated into precincts so that the board represents all areas of students in Forney. She said, “Because we've split the district north and south, it would be well worth the time...to have people divided into precincts.”

Incumbent Dr. John Taylor

Dr. John Taylor is a Forney dentist who started his dental practice here in 1987. He is a Texas Tech undergraduate and he graduated from the Baylor Dental College in 1985. He is a member of the Lions Club and a past president of the Forney Chamber of Commerce. He has five children, two of whom still attend Forney schools. Taylor has been a member of the Forney ISD Board of Trustees since 2004 and is currently the Board's vice president.

Taylor said that his vision for education inside the Forney community is, “We continue on a progression that will grow the student body and also give the student body the best way to get an education...We want to develop a real broad student.”

He referred to the financial mix-up at FISD in 2011 as a “tragedy” that no one on the board wanted to happen. He said, “We have developed steps to be more transparent and we have more budget meetings and budget disclosures. We have put more measures in place to keep those plans.”

Taylor was asked an audience question about whether Forney ISD should move the sixth grade students to the middle schools. He said that Forney changed over to the K-6 program so that the subdivisions could have neighborhood schools. He feels that the curriculum FISD is on now “appears to be in line with the K-6” and that it would take an entire “school of thought change” to move the sixth graders into the middle schools.

Incumbent Keith Bell

Keith Bell missed the first part of the event due to being inducted into the International Business Honor Society that same evening. He and his family moved to Forney in 1986 and have seen two children go through the Forney schools and graduate. Bell owns local Forney company Intex Electric. He has served on the FISD Board of Trustees for 15 years and is currently the president of the Forney ISD Board of Trustees. Bell was recognized earlier this year as Forney's Citizen of the Year.

Bell made it to the event in time to answer an audience question and he apologized for being late. He said he has gone back to college “at 48 years old” and will graduate from Dallas Baptist College in May. He was asked what his experience is with the e-books program. Bell said that they have been able to put some of the Forney ISD curriculum into the e-books and they are working to get all of the curriculum in the e-books.

Bell spoke to the fact that the FISD recently made their third installment payment towards paying off the debt from 2011, and they have only two payments left. The board received the State Comptroller's Gold Leadership Circle award “for financial transparency in 2013.” Bell believes it is “imperative” for him to finish the race and see Forney ISD get where it used to be financially. He praised Superintendent Holland and the current board for their hard work and leadership. He noted that the school district was recognized as Exemplary in 2010 and was Recognized in 2008, 2009, and 2011.

Air medical helicopter lands for Forney's Lake Pointe Emergency Department ribbon-cutting ceremony
A PHI Air Medical helicopter landed at the Forney Medical Plaza for the Lake Pointe Emergency Department's (ED) ribbon-cutting ceremony on April 30, 2013. The ceremony was presented by the Forney Chamber of Commerce at the recently opened Emergency Department on its helipad.

Since opening in the beginning of April, the Emergency Department has already set a new milestone in patients seen and/or treated at this facility in one day. That record number was 27 patients set on April 29, and a representative from Lake Pointe expects that number to continually rise as more and more Forney and surrounding area residents become more aware of the facility.

Lake Pointe CEO Brett Lee spoke of the Emergency Department's facilities after the ribbon-cutting ceremony. Lee said it has been 50 years since Forney had 24/7 medical care and that Lake Pointe strives to provide “high quality and coordinated care” for Forney and the surrounding areas.

Forney Mayor Darren Rozell said that the new facility fits with the council's vision of “partnerships for a better Forney,” that was discussed at the council's strategic retreat earlier this year. Much of the success of the facility was accredited to the vision and persistence of former Mayor Darrell Grooms, Mayor Darren Rozell and the Forney City Council, and the local community identifying the need for emergency services in Forney.

The 8,017 square-foot Emergency Department features six treatment rooms, two patient triage rooms, and a fully computerized, Level 4, accredited Primary Stroke Center alongside the already available Imaging Center.

Forney Youth Baseball Association's Battle at the Park USSSA Tournament a big hit
On April 28 and 29, an impressive 33 teams converged on Mulberry Park in Forney, Texas, for the Battle at the Park USSSA Tournament hosted by the Forney Youth Baseball Association (FYBA). Because of near perfect weather conditions, bats cracking on home-run hits and cheering parents could be heard across the park.

7U, 8U, 9U, and 12U teams from all over north Texas competed in the AA Division tournament and were guaranteed at least three games each. This is the second tournament hosted by the FYBA since making a league affiliation change from Little League to United States Specialty Sports Association (USSSA) in the fall season of 2012. The first tournament was in March and drew 20 teams.

FYBA President Bobby Bridges said, “There were some talented players that came out to compete and many of the teams expressed a desire to continually come out to tournaments here in Forney.” The FYBA's next tournament will be played on June 8, 2013. “These tournaments could not be possible without the continued dedication and hard work from the FYBA Board Members and commissioners,” said Bridges.

The league host the tournaments to raise money for the FYBA. That money, says Bridges, will be used to help make much needed renovations to Mulberry Park, “We use these fields day in and day out, we want to do our part to help with the maintenance and improvements of the park to ensure the park can be used by baseball teams and kids in the future.”

Bridges also credited the Forney Parks Department for the upkeep of the park and playing fields, “Many of the coaches from other cities have complemented our fields and say this is one of the reasons they will be returning to play in Forney.”

The winning teams from each league received a gold USSSA championship ring and 2nd place received a silver ring.

Kaufman County: Prosecutor, former interim DA resigns and new judge sworn in
Kaufman County prosecutor Brandi Fernandez resigned from her post at the District Attorney's office on Monday, April 29.

Fernandez served as the interim District Attorney after the murder of DA Mike McLelland on March 30, 2013. Judge Erleigh Norville Wiley was later appointed by Governor Rick Perry to be Kaufman County's District Attorney, replacing Fernandez, and will serve the remainder of McLelland's term.

The resignation comes only a week after Wiley was sworn in and it is still unclear why Fernandez chose to resign. DA Wiley previously served 10 years as a Kaufman County Judge in the County Court at Law.

On May 1, defense attorney Dennis Jones was sworn in as the new judge in the County Court at Law, Wiley's former seat. Kaufman County Commissioners made that appointment last Friday. Jones has been practicing law in Texas since 1979.

Forney woman arrested on outstanding warrant after political confrontation
Updated May 6, 5:00 p.m. Ramona “Denise” Bell, 52, of Forney was arrested on an outstanding warrant from Kaufman County for theft of property by check valued between $20 and $500. Bell is the owner and managing editor of the Forney Post and is also a very outspoken supporter of the challengers in the upcoming Forney City Council elections.

At approximately 3:30 p.m. on May 4, several individuals were distributing campaign fliers in the neighborhood northwest of Pinson Road when they were confronted by Bell, according to the complainant. Reportedly, Bell began photographing the complainant and her young daughter and, when asked to stop, the complainant said Bell began verbally harassing them with profanity laced comments.

The complainant and her daughter then left the scene of the altercation but were followed by Bell to their home in the Mustang Creek subdivision, the neighborhood on the southeastern side of Pinson Road. According to the complainant, Bell continued to drive back and forth in front of her home.

An officer with the Forney Police Department was called to the complainant's home to take an official report of the incident. Upon investigating, the officer became aware of the outstanding warrant and an arrest was made on the warrant. According to Kaufman County records, the offense is a Class B Misdemeanor. According to the Forney Police Department, Bell was charged with Disorderly Conduct, a Class C Misdemeanor, as a result of the incident.

The theft by check case against Bell was initially filed on September 21, 2009, with Kaufman County. According to Kaufman County records, the offense date occurred on January 21, 2009 and the arrest warrant has been active since September 17, 2009. The warrant was returned to Kaufman County on September 24, 2009, unserved and again issued on September 28, 2009.

Bell was held at the Forney City Jail overnight. On the morning of May 5, Bell was transported to the Kaufman County Jail where she was later released on a $750 personal recognizance bond.

While at the Forney Justice Center awaiting comment from the department's public information officer, inForney.com was subject to the same type of harassment from the family of Bell and staff writer Christy Brau. Information from the Forney Police Department is expected to be released soon.

Requests for comments from persons at Bell's residence immediately following the arrest have been unanswered.

State Representative calls the arrest of Forney woman into question

State Representative calls the arrest of Forney woman into question
In an e-mail to the media on May 5, 2013, State Representative Lance Gooden called the arrest of Denise Bell by the Forney Police Department a political move “to silence the media.” Bell is the owner and managing editor of the Forney Post.

The arrest of Denise Bell

On Saturday afternoon, May 5, Bell was arrested on an outstanding warrant for Theft by Check that was issued in September 2009. Before the arrest was made on the outstanding warrant, Bell was involved in an incident with two individuals, a woman and her young daughter, distributing political fliers earlier that morning. Reportedly, Bell began photographing the complainant and her young daughter and, when asked to stop, the complainant said Bell began verbally harassing them with profanity laced comments.

According to a press release from the Forney Police Department, “A Class C Misdemeanor citation was issued to Ramona Denise Bell out of Forney for Disorderly Conduct. A computer check revealed that Bell had an outstanding warrant out of Kaufman County for a Class B Misdemeanor Theft by Check. Bell was taken into custody and transported to the Forney Jail.”

Bell was transferred to the Kaufman County Jail on Sunday morning and released on a $750 personal recognizance bond. “It is almost unheard of to arrest someone at home for this, especially a Saturday in front of her 80 year old mother that she cares for. She is stuck in the Forney city jail at least until Monday since a judge is unavailable until then,” stated Gooden in the email.

Bell's and Gooden's support for the challengers

Bell has been a very outspoken supporter of the challengers in the upcoming Forney Mayoral and City Council elections. Bell criticizes the Forney City Council for corruption and "good ole' boy antics". Representative Gooden has also supported the challengers in the election by donating $1,200 each to the campaigns of John Carr, Scott Regan, and Joc Lomax. A supporter of Gooden's campaign also donated $3,000 each to challengers John Carr and Scott Regan for political mailers.

Falling out of Mayor Rozell and Rep. Gooden

“This is a Mayor going overboard to silence the media after they come after her for public corruption. Please help,” states the email from Gooden.

Forney Mayor Darren Rozell and State Representative Gooden had a “falling out” after last year's elections in which Gooden ran against challenger Stuart Spitzer. Gooden listed Rozell as an endorsement in his campaign but Rozell later endorsed Spitzer's campaign for State Representative.

Mayor Darren Rozell responded to the email saying, “I continue to be amazed at Representative Gooden's level of interest in this local campaign. I understand that our legislators are very busy in Austin. However, I believe it would have been better for Mr. Gooden to take the time to get all the facts before deciding to contact the media.”

Several attempts by inForney.com to contact Rep. Gooden for comment were unsuccessful.

Documents have been requested from the State Attorney General's Office regarding the claims of corruption and claims of official oppression made by Bell. A representative with the Texas Ranger's office said that their office was not currently investigating corruption charges against the Forney City Council or its members.

Forney Fire Department stands guard for fallen brothers in West, Texas
A solemn tradition, a calling, and an honor. Members of the Forney Fire Department participated in the honor guard duties to stand vigil alongside their fallen brothers who lost their lives in the explosion in West, Texas.

An explosion at a fertilizer plant in West, Texas, on April 17, 2013, killed 12 first responders that were battling an initial blaze. Departments from all over Texas immediately responded to contain the fires that now spanned several city blocks – in a town of only 3,000 people.

Nearly every member of the West community was impacted by the explosion and the same can be said for firefighter community across the country. It's estimated that an event this catastrophic hasn't impacted the fire community since September 11, 2001.

Forney Fire Department Chief Townsend said that several of their volunteer firefighters who work for other area departments responded to the initial explosion call. Last week, they returned again with other members of the Forney Fire Department to stand as members of the Honor Guard. Fire service tradition says that a firefighter will never be left alone, so typically one or two members will stand guard of the caskets of their brothers for 24 hours a day until burial.

“This became a daunting task due to the number of fatalities that had occurred and the fallen firefighters were located in several different cities,” said Townsend. “Thankfully, The Texas Line of Duty Death Task Force was in place to offer assistance for such a tragedy as this.”

Forney firefighters alternated shifts with firefighters from all over the country – protecting, guarding, and accompanying their fallen brothers.

The LODD Task Force is a volunteer group made up primarily of firefighters who assist with the needs of families who have suffered the loss of a first responder while on duty. For more information about the Texas Line of Duty Death Task Force visit their website, here.

2nd Annual Forney's Boutique Bridal Show on June 2
Renee's Eventi will be hosting the 2nd Annual Forney's Boutique Bridal Show on Sunday, June 2, 2013, from 11:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. Because of the success of last year's event, it will once again be held at the Christopher Inn & Suites Best Western of Forney.

Lakesha Wells, owner of Renee's Eventi, ventured into uncharted waters last year when she had the idea of holding a bridal show in Forney. Wells said what started as an opportunity to showcase Renee's Eventi, an event planning business, became so much more.

Local vendors in the event planning, service, and bridal businesses are now given the opportunity to showcase their services to local brides in the now-booming Forney economy. Forney is seeing more and more young couples getting married and calling Forney their home.

According to Wells, last year the event drew 15 local vendors. This year, many of those vendors are returning for a second year and the total vendors for this year is approximately 20. Wells said she is looking forward to attracting brides from the surrounding area, not just Forney, to the show.

Event guests will be given an opportunity to enjoy samples from the food service vendors, participate in giveaways throughout the evening, grab a glass of wine, and enjoy a fashion show.

Admission to the show is $5 or $10 for VIP admission which includes a “glam bag.” Advanced tickets for the show may be purchased online, here. More information about Renee's Eventi can be found on their Facebook Page, here.

Kemp Police Chief rescued from abandoned water well
On May 7, at approximately 8:56 a.m., the Kaufman County Sheriff's Office received a call of loose livestock on FM 2860. A Kaufman County Deputy responded to that call and was assisted by Kemp Police Chief Jimmy Council who arrived on scene at 9:05 a.m.

According to the Kaufman County Sheriff's Office, a short time after responding to the call, a person at Kemp City Hall received a text message  from Council that he had fallen in an abandoned water well. Deputies were able to locate Council and used a long dog leash to reach Council until fire-rescue personnel arrived.

“It appears as though Chief Council fell 15-20 feet before bracing himself. Rescue personnel from the Kemp Volunteer Fire Department and the Kaufman Fire Department extricated Chief Council from the well at approximately 10:02 a.m.” stated Kaufman County Public Information Officer Justin Lewis in a press release.

Chief Council was transported to an area hospital with minor injuries for evaluation.

Forney's 5th Annual Main Street Liberty 5K had record number of runners
Forney's 5th Annual Main Street Liberty 5K Race took place on Saturday, May 4. A record number of runners, 210, participated in the event. According to Forney EDC Director Kim Buttram, it was 20 percent more participants than last year.

With music being pumped out by a DJ, the sunny Saturday race had a vibrant atmosphere. Many kids and adults first participated in the free 1 mile “Fun Run” on Main Street. Two local girls, Emily and Ivy Carr sprinted across the finish line first in that event. The twins later participated and completed the 5K run.

EDC staff member Kayla Bryson was responsible for putting the event together. The 5K benefited the effort to get the clock tower at Main and Elm fixed and upgraded. The cost to repair the clock and add a sound system will cost approximately $15,000. Buttram thanked Bryson for her hard work and told the crowd, “We wanted to show the city that downtown and new Forney connect.” The race course started on Main Street and Elm and went all the way to the Forney Community Park and back to Main St.

The 210 enthusiastic runners lined up for the start of the 5K after the Fun Run ended. Mayor Darren Rozell gave the countdown to start the run and a large number of onlookers and well wishers cheered on the participants. As the race took place, the DJ played a song by Montgomery Gentry called “My Town.” The lyrics seemed to fit perfectly at the downtown event, “Where I was born, where I was raised, where I keep all my yesterdays...this is my town.”

Joshua Taylor was the Men's Open Winner with a finish time of just under 19 minutes. Elyse Derian was the Women's Open Winner with a finish time of just under 20 minutes. The three top finishers in each age group were given trophies and medals at the end of the event. Forney burger rivals close businesses within days of each other
Two staples in Forney's restaurant scene have closed their doors in the past two weeks. Brady's Family Grill, formerly Brady's Burgers, and Half Time Pizza, Burgers, and Salads.

Although Half Time served pizza, wings, and other foodie concoctions, a rivalry formed between the two restaurants. Who served the best burger in town? In what now seems to be a tie, both restaurants closed within days of each other and both gave no warning to their die-hard fans.

Brady's Burgers opened their doors for the first time in 2008 in the Mustang Crossing Center off of FM 548 – the same place Half Time would open its doors four years later. After four successful years, Brady's Burgers announced that, after a dissolution of a partnership, they would be closing their doors but vowed to return to Forney.

Half Time opened for business in Brady's Burgers former building in June, 2012. After a bumpy start, Half Time hired Nate DeWitt of Florida as the new Operational Owner in October, 2012. DeWitt hired a new chef, transformed the menu, and created a following in Forney. The building has now been sold to a new owner who has a different vision for the space. DeWitt said, the best thing moving forward was to close their doors after only eight months.

Brady's Burgers opened again under the new name of Brady's Family Grill on January 11, 2013, but for only four short months before closing in late April, 2013. Kevin and Tiffani Andrews, owners of Brady's, considered many different locations in Forney before deciding on the old Grandma's Chicken and Duplicate That building on Pinson Road. According to sources, a tough decision was made by the Andrews to both focus on their current careers and close Brady's for good.

The rivalry between the two businesses only benefited the many patrons of both establishments. The burger boundaries were continually being were pushed, creating great tasting and very unique burgers.

Terrell police chase suspect through Forney, ends in Mesquite
On May 8, the Dallas County Sheriff's Office arrested 29-year-old Armando Fuentes of Terrell after he allegedly stole a truck in Terrell, Texas, and led authorities on a 50-minute police chase. The stolen vehicle was described as a white, four-door, flat bed pickup truck.

According to the Terrell Police Department, the chase began at approximately 10:00 a.m. in the 1600 block of West Moore Avenue when Fuentes refused to stop for police. Fuentes then fled on westbound US Highway 80 through Forney and into Mesquite with speeds in excess of 100 mph at times.

Fuentes fled along Scyene Road and Military Parkyway in Mesquite and then entered northbound 635. He later exited Town East Blvd, made his way to Gus Thomasson Road, and continued on the eastbound service road of Interstate 30.

Eventually, Fuentes ended up on Galloway where he drove in the opposite direction of traffic towards Americana Lane. The suspect's stolen vehicle slowed after hitting deployed spike strips. Fuentes surrendered without incident on Americana Lane, just feet from Poteet High School.

According to Dallas County Jail records, Fuentes is charged with aggravated assault against a public servant and evading arrest/detention with a vehicle.

Witnesses said that the vehicle belonged to Charlie Harris who confronted Fuentes during the theft. Harris held onto the truck as Fuentes was fleeing and pulled the steering wheel to avoid hitting a child in the path of the fleeing suspect.

Forney High School students presented grant from Verizon for winning national mobile app competition
FORNEY, Texas – The Verizon Foundation recently presented a $10,000 grant to a team of engineering students at Forney High School for winning the Verizon National Innovative Mobile App Competition. The grant was awarded to the students by Verizon Vice President of External Affairs, David Russell during a reception held in the board room at the Forney ISD Central Administration building on Friday, May 3.

The students are members of the Forney High School Project Lead the Way™ team involved with the Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) program. The team designed a mobile app for Forney High School and the Forney Independent School District with the support of Wesley Benjamin, the Engineering Design and Aerospace Engineering instructor at Forney High School. All of the students are seniors and plan on majoring in some area of engineering in college. The students on the Project Lead the Way Team™ that won the national competition are Abbey Polzin, Zachary Chavez, Amanda Koif, Thomas Sifuentes and Travis Coltharp.

The students designed a mobile app called “One|Place”. The Forney High School team won the state level competition to move on to the national challenge. They are the only school in the State of Texas to be selected as a national winner. The team’s entry was selected as one of the best designs from more than 470 submissions nationwide. The app offers students, faculty and the community one location to find details about upcoming school and community events. Verizon selected 10 schools, five high schools and five middle schools, as national winners.

In addition to the $10,000 grant, the Verizon Foundation also awarded the students Samsung Galaxy Notebook 10.1 tablets so they could create the app.

The students have been working with an engineer from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) to develop their winning app and make it available for download from the Google Play Store. The team members are using a program called MIT App Inventor to create the app. The students anticipate that the app will be live and available for students, parents, teachers, district administrators and the community to download by June of this year.

The students are scheduled to present the app at the National Technology Student Association Conference in Orlando, Florida, in June.

The Verizon Innovative App Challenge was created by the Verizon Foundation in partnership with the Technology Student Association to increase engagement and interest in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). The students were invited to create concepts for unique mobile apps that incorporate STEM subjects to address needs or problems in their schools or communities.

18-wheeler jackknifes and explodes on US Highway 80 in Forney
Forney, Texas – US Highway 80 was closed for several hours after another 18-wheeler accident between FM 460 and the Broad Street exit. The accident occurred around 10:30 p.m. on Saturday night, May 11, 2013.

The 18-wheeler veered off the right shoulder down the steep embankment, causing it to jackknife. The truck's fuel tanks ruptured and caused an explosion that many witnesses saw and heard. One witness said the flames shot at least 30 feet in the air. Forney Fire Department responded with the department's three largest engines and other rigs to combat the fire.

The Forney Police Department closed both eastbound lanes of traffic and allowed vehicles to exit on the FM 460 on-ramp. No other vehicles were involved in the accident and the driver's condition is still unknown.
