On Monday, July 1, 2013, the Forney Police Department assisted in the arrest of a would-be thief in Terrell, Texas. 55-year-old Carl Morton Mayo of Wills Point, Texas, was arrested and charged with theft of property of the value of $500 to $1,500.
The Terrell Police Department first responded to the theft call at the Wal-Mart store located at 1900 West Moore Avenue in Terrell, Texas, at approximately noon. Mayo allegedly stole an iPad 3 and other personal items valued at over $800 from a contractor working at the store. The contractor was able to track the iPad by GPS to an area near the intersection of IH 635 and US Highway 80 in Mesquite, Texas.
While conducting the on-scene investigation, authorities continued to track the iPad by GPS. Nearly an hour later, authorities noticed the GPS signal tracking back towards Kaufman County. According to the Terrell Police Department, once the device began heading eastbound out of Mesquite and into Forney, the Forney Police Department was contacted and asked to be on the lookout for the suspect’s vehicle.
Slightly after 1:00 p.m., Forney Police Officer M. Byford saw the suspect’s blue 1990 Yamaha motorcycle traveling eastbound on US Highway 80 into the City of Forney and pulled over the suspect. Terrell Police responded to the scene and took custody of the prisoner, recovered the stolen property, and impounded the motorcycle.
“Teamwork and good interdepartmental communications led to the arrest, as well as simply good police work on the part of Forney PD,” said Chief Jody L. Lay of the Terrell Police Department.
Mayo was arrested and charged with the theft offense and taken to the Terrell Municipal Jail. Mayo was later transported to the Kaufman County Jail and is currently being held on a $50,000 bond.
“This is another example of the value of partnerships and teamwork in our law enforcement community,” said Chief Lay. “We work well with Forney P.D. and this is a fringe benefit of that relationship,” said Lay.
