City of Kaufman Police Chief Chris Aulbaugh announced his resignation on July 12, 2013, in a memorandum to the Kaufman City Council, Kaufman Mayor Fortner, and Kaufman City Manager Curtis Snow.
According to Aulbaugh's memo, Aulbaugh will be starting a new job on August 1, 2013, although he only recently took the role of police chief in Kaufman after leaving the Dallas Police Department last year.
Aulbaugh shared many of Kaufman's darkest hours and finest moments in the one year he worked at the department.
In April, Assistant District Attorney Mark Hasse was shot and killed in broad daylight in the Kaufman County Annex building parking lot – only a block from work at the Kaufman County Courthouse. Eric Williams and his wife Kim Williams were later arrested and indicted for the capital murder of Hasse and fellow District Attorney Mike McLelland and his wife, Cynthia.
Eric and Kim Williams await trial on the alleged capital murder charges. Dallas County District Judge Snipes was appointed as the visiting judge in the trials after Kaufman County Judge Chitty recused himself.
Aulbaugh praised the Kaufman Police Department in his memo stating, “they [Kaufman Police Department] have taken the crime rate from almost the highest in the County to the lowest in the County within a few short years.”
According to Aulbaugh, during his tenure as police chief, four new officers were hired that filled vacancies, there was an all-time low crime rate in the City of Kaufman, and the vehicle fleet was improved with a suitable Crown Victoria Police Vehicle replacement – all while operating within the department's budget.
Aulbaugh cites many personal reasons for the job move and stated, “I have been truly blessed and privileged to have had the opportunity to serve the citizens of Kaufman with you for this past year. You have all been so very supportive throughout this time and especially during some of the toughest times this community or any of us have ever had to face.”
It was reported by the Dallas Morning News that Aulbaugh is the sole finalist for the deputy police chief position at the City of Coppell.
