It was a cold and windy day at Forney Community Park for Metro East Softball Association's Opening Day ceremonies on April 6, 2013. According to MESA President Jeff Fudge, there were nearly 35 teams, out of approximately 53 teams in the league, present for the ceremonies.
Several hundred people were in attendance to watch Forney's Mayor Darren Rozell throw out the first pitch to Kyler Sanders of the 2003 Texas Raiders. The United States flag was risen to half-staff to honor the loss of Kaufman County District Attorney Mike McLelland and his wife Cynthia McLelland.
Fudge said this is an exciting season for MESA because they have made a couple of changes in the league. MESA added a 4U league which allows three and four-year-old players. MESA also changed 6U from machine-pitch to competitive coach-pitch. Fudge said hopefully the change in pitch in 6U will allow the players to learn the game sooner.
