Forney, Texas – A steady increase in the number of home burglaries has some Windmill Farms residents on edge. Between August 18, 2013, and September 5, 2013, Kaufman County records show a total of seven home burglaries and two other theft related incidents.
The burglaries occurred on Kelsey Court, Chisholm Trail, Preston Trail, Brook Meadow Drive, Wedgewood, Rocky Hills Trail, and Persimmons Way. An additional information request has been made by inForney.com to Kaufman County to see if there have been any other burglaries have been reported in the specified time range but the information was not yet available at the time of reporting.
inForney.com spoke to Chris Winston whose Brook Meadow Drive home was burglarized on Thursday morning, September 5, 2013. Winston believes his home was broken into that morning between 9:00 a.m. and noon while everyone was out of the house. “We didn't notice until about 11:00 p.m. that night that something was wrong,” said Winston.
Winston's wife, Lauren, couldn't find their laptop; they assumed it was just misplaced. It wasn't until the couple was going to bed and Chris reached over to set his alarm clock, which was no longer there, they realized something was wrong. “I thought there was no way our kids would misplace the laptop and then my alarm clock, they don't mess with my alarm clock,” said Chris Winston. After that, the couple realized they had been robbed and called 911.
The Winstons determined an unlocked window at the back of the house was the point of entry for the burglars. Winston says the burglars cut a slit in their window screen to remove it and later replace it without breaking it. They opened the window and only took small things that might be overlooked or easily misplaced; laptop, tablets, ipod, alarm clock, and other small electronics easy to carry. When the burglars left, they closed the window and replaced the screen. Most everything in the house remained in its original position and signs of a burglary weren't evident. “It was a clean break in,” says Winston.
“This was a lesson learned. Just because we are out here in Kaufman County and Forney and it is fairly quiet doesn't mean we can leave our windows and doors unlocked,” said Winston. “Be careful. No one was hurt. I'm glad my wife wasn't hurt, but you just never know.”
1C Water District Board Vice President Scott Johnson says that both 1B and 1C water districts, which serve Windmill Farms, have a contract proposal in with the Kaufman County Sheriff's Office to provide a deputy for the neighborhood for dedicated patrol. “With a growing neighborhood, a better sense of security and lesser response times should we need officer involvement is important,” said Johnson. The proposal asks for a dedicated deputy to patrol Windmill Farms for 40 hours a week except when the deputy is needed elsewhere on an emergency.
The Kaufman County Sheriff's Office was unavailable for comment today on the burglaries and were also not able to provide any further details on whether any arrests have been made or provide suspect(s) description on the incidents. inForney.com will follow up on any further developments in these cases.
CrimeReports lists two "breaking and entering" incidents, three "theft" incidents, and two "theft from vehicle" incidents for the month of July in Windmill Farms. CrimeReports also lists one "breaking and entering" incident and one "theft" incident in the month of June.
