The Forney Police Department will host free training classes for the “Citizens on Patrol” (COPs) program next week. The classes will be on Monday and Tuesday night, September 23rd and 24th at 7:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. at the Forney Police Department.
“New members will have an opportunity to learn more about this volunteer program and how it benefits the community,” said Det. Michael Clay with the Forney Police Department.
Currently, the COPs program uses two patrol cars outfitted with the COPs logo. One is a retired police cruiser painted black and white with a red and blue light bar on top, much like a normal police cruiser.
COP volunteers drive around Forney and assist in crime prevention, alert authorities of suspicious activities, assist officers in directing traffic at major accidents, and other officer assistance related activities.
The training courses will cover all of the ways a COPs volunteers will be able to assist the Forney Police Department. Volunteers must pass a background check and will also need to take at least 16 hours of ride-a-longs.
The COPs program meets on the last Monday of each month, except November and December, at 7:00 p.m. at the Forney Police Department.
