Lance Gooden and Stuart Spitzer Round 2, race for District 4 State Representative in 2014
District 4 State Representative Lance Gooden (R) announced his intentions today, November 12, 2013, to run for his third consecutive term as District 4 State Representative. His announcement follows Dr. Stuart Spitzer's (R) announcement on September 14, 2013, of his intentions to contend for the seat again in the Republican primary after a narrow defeat in 2012.
In Kaufman County in 2012, Gooden won with a mere 163 votes (51%) of 8,181 votes cast. In Henderson County, Gooden won with a much larger margin of 58% of 6,626 total votes cast.

Both candidates have already begun knocking doors and campaigning for the March 4th Republican Primary. Most recently in Forney, Gooden attended the Forney Area Chamber of Commerce and discussed the 83rd Legislative Session including his efforts to pass voter identification and pro-life legislation.

“This was another successful session for the people of Henderson and Kaufman Counties,” Gooden said in a press release. “We passed a balanced budget that protected the Rainy Day Fund and cut $1.36 billion in taxes to ensure Texas maintains a friendly climate for job creation. We stood our ground against Obamacare by opposing Medicaid expansion in the state, and we passed a series of groundbreaking pieces of legislation to protect life, the second amendment, religious freedom and many other issues that we conservatives hold dear.”

Gooden is a Terrell native and current resident, a Terrell High School graduate, and graduated from the University of Texas with finance and government degrees. According to a recent mailer, Gooden “now works for a Texas-owned, global financial services firm where he specializes in business development.”

Spitzer was born and raised in Athens, Texas, where he graduated from Athens High School. Spitzer later graduated from Trinity Valley Community College and went on to earn his Bachelors Degree from Baylor and a Medical Doctor Degree from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas, Texas. Spitzer and his family have since moved to Kaufman, Texas, where he works as a physician at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital.

Spitzer stated in a September press release, “My whole life has been focused on the needs and values of the people in Kaufman and Henderson counties. As a surgeon in this district for the last 15 years, my passion is for the health and well being of Texans, but I am also concerned about the decisions being made in Austin that affect future generations. Last Session, the Texas Legislature decided to pass a budget that was $22 billion larger than our previous budget, earning scorn from conservatives across the state, and attracting national media attention. I won’t stand by and watch the state of Texas be compared to California. I want to fight for what’s important to the citizens of District 4, not for special interests and the wishes of Austin lobbyists. This campaign will be about sending a State Representative to Austin who will fight for responsible spending, an education system based around quality and competition, and being honest with the voters of District 4.”

Texas House District 4 includes all of Kaufman County and a majority of Henderson County including Athens, Texas. The filing deadline is December 9, 2013.

In other 2014 March Primary Election news for Kaufman County, the following individuals have filed as of 9:00 p.m. on November 12, 2013, according to the Secretary of State's website. For 86th District Judge, incumbent Howard Tygrett (R) has filed alongside challenger Rebecca Calabria (R). Current District Clerk Rhonda Hughey (R) has filed for her same seat. Jakie Allen (R) has filed for Precinct 4 County Commissioner – incumbent Tom Manning has not filed yet.
