The Forney Fire Department responded to a grass fire in the 16000 block of Valley View just before a quickly spreading grass fire engulfed the homeowner's barn.
Just before 5:30 p.m. the Forney Fire Department received the call about the grass fire that originated near a power pole on the homeowner's property. When the firefighters arrived on the scene, the fire was only inches away from the barn. Just prior to the fire, electricity went out at the home situated on 45 acres. The homeowner believes a hawk landed on an electric pole, was electrocuted, and fell to the ground in flames sparking the blaze.
The fire burned nearly 3 acres of land and crossed about 100 yards to reach the barn. A boat parked next to the barn on a trailer did sustain fire damage however.
Forney Fire Department's rescue truck arrived on the scene first and scrambled to engage the hose on the truck's roof in the midst of the fire and smoke. After containing the fire near the barn, the rescue truck followed the fire line and extinguished it. Electricity was restored by FEC Electric to the home and a neighbor's home within an hour.
The homeowners were celebrating their 24th wedding anniversary today – apparently there is still a spark.
