Forney man arrested in Las Vegas after shooting at Greyhound station
A Forney man, who police describe as a vagrant, was arrested in Las Vegas after a shooting at a downtown Greyhound station near Freemont Street on Thursday, December 5, 2013, according to the Las Vegas Metro Police Department (LVMPD).
64-year-old James Abney was arrested and held without bail in the Clark County jail on a charge of attempted murder after firing a small chrome handgun several times at bus terminal security guards at approximately 6:40 p.m. local time Thursday afternoon. Abney is also being held on a charge of attempted battery with a deadly weapon on a $10,000 bond and discharging a gun at/into an occupied structure on a $20,000 bond.

According to a LVMPD police report, a bus terminal security guard asked Abney, who was seeking warmth and a bus ticket to California, to leave several times over the past few days. When Abney was again asked to leave on Thursday afternoon, Abney pulled the gun and pointed it at the guard who pled for his life, according to the report. Abney then fired his gun into the air.

The security guard ran from Abney into the bus terminal where he attempted to contact the police. According to the report, Abney then smoked a cigarette before following the guard into the bus terminal. Abney spotted the guard leaving the terminal through a side entrance and shot at him once hitting a glass wall next to the exit.

The guard found his supervisor who attempted to block Abney into the bus terminal with her vehicle. The supervisor fled when Abney approached her. Three more shots were fired, according to the report.

Abney also allegedly put the gun in his mouth and pulled the trigger twice before police arrived but was out of ammunition, according to the report. Nobody was ultimately injured in the gunfire and Abney was taken into custody without any further incident, said Las Vegas Metro Police Department spokesperson Laura Meltzer when contacted for comment by inForney.com.

According to Dallas County criminal records, Abney was previously charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and theft over $200 in 1977. There were no criminal records for Abney in Kaufman County.
