Terrell Police issue public notice alerting of possible phone scams
Terrell, Texas – Terrell police say scammers are possibly using caller ID spoofing equipment in an effort to manipulate and scam innocent people by using a number assigned to the Terrell Police Department.

So far, the Terrell Police Department has received two separate and isolated reports from people who live outside of Terrell, Texas. According to Captain A.D. Sansom with the Terrell Police Department, the caller identifies themselves as a representative of the Terrell Police Department and may be reading from a script which demands payment for monies owed to the Terrell Police Department.

The potential victims are then instructed to call another phone number to make payment.

“Citizens please be aware,” says Sansom. “The Terrell Police Department does not collect debts or solicit funds for the agency or for any other entity. If you have questions, contact the Terrell Police Department and confirm.”

Of the two reports, says Sansom, neither victim was drawn into the scam and no losses were reported.

According to Sansom, the Terrell Police Department may make warrant notice phone calls or routine investigative calls concerning active investigations but they do not accept phone payments nor do they solicit them. “If it is a legitimate call, a true police employee will direct you to an official Terrell Police Department facility or the Terrell Municipal Court to conduct such transactions in person and provide you a receipt. You simply cannot clear up your warrant over the phone,” he says.

Sansom concludes, “Always ask for identification credentials and never agree to meet a caller at any location other than an official police facility.”

Persons with information concerning a crime should contact the Kaufman County Crime Stoppers at (877) 847-7522 or online at kaufmancountycrimestoppers.org. Crime stoppers tips are always confidential and can result in awards of up to $1000.00 if they lead to an arrest.
