Approximately 400 people attended the event which also featured Cruz's father Pastor Rafael Cruz, Texas State Senator Ken Paxton (R – Mckinney 8th District), and United States Congressman Jeb Hensarling (R – Texas 5th District).
Paxton and Hensarling gave brief remarks before Cruz's speech which included similar messages of criticism for President Obama, the Affordable Care Act, and the Obama administration.
Saturday's event can be seen as a turning point for Paxton and his campaign in the Republican Primaries for Texas Attorney General against Railroad Commissioner Barry Smitherman (R – Texas), and Rep. Dan Branch (R – Dallas) after receiving endorsements from Hensarling and Cruz.
“Ken Paxton has represented a great many of you for over a decade at the state House and state Senate. Ken Paxton is a tireless conservative worker. Ken Paxton stands and fights, whether its against Obamacare, whether its fighting for voter ID, or whether its fighting to defend our religious liberty. I'm proud to say Ken Paxton is my friend and fights hard for the state of Texas,” said U.S. Sen. Cruz.
Cruz began by promising to do his “very, very best to speak under 21 hours.” Cruz's speech, which lasted almost an hour, was frequently interrupted by applause and standing ovations from his supporters as he criticized Obama and discussed the pitfalls of the Affordable Care Act. Cruz also talked of abolishing the IRS, repealing Dodd-Frank, and the effects of Obamacare on small businesses.
U.S. Sen. Cruz likened the conservative grassroots movement of today to that of Reagan's in the late 1970's. “One of the great blessings of having the opportunity to serve in office at a time like this, is that I get to travel around and see the same exact thing. [Millions] of Americans are standing up just like in the 1970's and saying what we're doing isn't working.”
“Far too many people are hurting in this country. We don't have growth. We need to get back to the principles that have made this country the greatest and freest nation,” said U.S. Sen. Cruz.
