Kroger Marketplace in Forney opens to eager customers
The Forney Kroger Marketplace finally opened its doors on January 24, 2014, to a line of eager customers who waited outside in shivering early morning temperatures for the much anticipated opening of a truly one-of-a-kind store.

One lucky customer, Janel Lapp, won a Forney Economic Development Corporation sponsored contest to be the first customer in the Kroger Marketplace. Lapp also received a $100 gift card and strolled around the massive 123,000 square foot store with the whole store to herself.

Lapp went straight for the $3.99 a pound ribeye in the meat department. “I wanted to make sure I got some ribeye,” said Lapp reviewing her shopping list on her iPhone. “At $3.99 a pound, that's a good buy.”

As Lapp continued her shopping, Kroger decided to open their doors early to allow their first customers to get out of the cold weather. They were immediately greeted by hundreds of Kroger employees at the door, preparing sushi, handing out samples from all the major food sections, warming up Starbucks coffee, sizing rings at Fred Meyers, and transferring new customer prescriptions in the pharmacy.

The store held its official ribbon cutting ceremony at 10 a.m. featuring performances by the Forney High School Band drumline and the North Forney High School Chamber Choir.

“We are so proud to be a part of this community in Forney, Texas,” said President of Kroger's Southwest Division Bill Breetz during the ribbon cutting ceremony. “Our team is committed to giving you a great store with great service and being a part of your community.”

“Forney is very excited to have [Kroger] in our community,” said Forney's Mayor Darren Rozell who spoke on Kroger's commitment to the community and also the 300 new jobs created with its opening.

Kroger then made a $2,500 check donation to the Forney Education Leadership Foundation and also the Forney Area United Way. Southwest Division Media Relations representative Gary Huddleston also announced Kroger Rewards card holders can link their cards to area non-profits and Kroger will make contributions each time you shop. See the customer service desk for more information and participating non-profits.

Kroger is also participating in the Souper Bowl of Caring food drive benefiting the Forney food Pantry. Shoppers can purchase select brown bags throughout the store which will be donated. Forney's Brookshire's, First Presbyterian Church of Forney, First United Methodist Church, and St. Martin Catholic Church are also participating in the Souper Bowl of Caring food drive.
