The speed limit along FM 548 was previously 55 miles per hour with the exception of FM 548 between Lonesome Dove Drive, which is just north of the Starplex movie theatre, and FM 1641 which was 45 miles per hour. The corridor between Lonesome Dove Drive and FM 1641 will now be reduced to 40 miles per hour.
From Lonesome Dove Drive to the northern city limits near the Animal Medical Center of Forney on FM 548 the speed limit will be reduced from 55 miles per hour to 50 miles per hour. From FM 1641 to Melody Lane, the speed limit will be reduced from 55 miles per hour to 50 miles per hour. The speed limit from Melody Lane to the southern city limits will remain unchanged at 55 miles per hour.
“TxDOT sets the speed limits on their FM roads, the city doesn't have a choice,” said Assistant City Manager Gina Nash. “They do the speed studies and they present the information to us and we are required to change the speed limits based on those studies.”
The ordinance altering the speed limits on FM 548 was approved by all council members at Tuesday night's city council meeting on February 4, 2014. According to Nash, the new speed limit signs will be installed in the near future.
