Civil Air Patrol performs search and rescue exercises at Terrell Municipal Airport
Terrell, Texas – The Civil Air Patrol performed two days of search and rescue exercises this weekend at the City of Terrell Municipal Airport. The exercises were done in conjunction with groups all over the state of Texas, according to Civil Air Patrol Public Information Officer Robert Bruton. The Civil Air Patrol receives funding from the United States Air Force to perform the drills which include aerial search and rescue, ground search and rescue, aircraft runway marshaling, and other communications drills.

“The Civil Air Patrol assists in approximately 95% of all search and rescue efforts nationwide, from downed aircraft to missing people,” said Bruton. The Civil Air Patrol consists of teams of all volunteers including pilots, cadets, photographers, chaplains, and educators.

Next weekend, approximately 40 cadets and five aircraft will also converge on the City of Terrell Municipal Airport to conduct ground drills, mobile communication center training, and orientation flights, according to Civil Air Patrol Captain Jerry Barron, Black Sheep Squadron Deputy Commander for Cadets. “The cadets play a vital part in our search and rescue operations,” he said.

The Civil Air Patrol cadet program includes more than 26,000 members, male and female, from ages 12 through 20. The local cadet program which operates out of Mesquite Metro Airport, under the Black Sheep Composite Squadron, has approximately 15 to 20 youth cadets at any given time, said Barron. The cadets also go on camping trips where they perform nighttime exercises, train in survival tactics, and perform service projects.

The Black Sheep Composite Squadron typically holds an open house at their hangar at Mesquite Metro Airport during a 5th Tuesday of any given month. The squadron meets weekly on Tuesday nights.
