For the month of February, the City of Forney received a net payment of $493,141.18. The February collection numbers reflect sales tax collections from local merchants during December of 2013. The February net payment also increased 12.74 percent from the same time last year.
Last fiscal year, the sales tax collection grew a little more than 23 percent, according to Leigh Corson, Director of Administrative Services for the City of Forney. “[The numbers] reflect the economy in Forney is doing well,” she said. “People are out spending money.”
“We've had an expansion of our retail and commercial base and that's reflected in the numbers going up over the last couple of years,” said Corson. “It's a very healthy increase.”
The February monthly net payment is also more than double what was paid to the City of Forney 20 years ago for all of 1994 – which was a total of $201,460.81.
Any increase in sales tax collection from the new Kroger Marketplace won't be reflected in the total collection numbers until March 2014 which could reflect a wash across the board with shoppers changing their local shopping habits or an increase with shoppers choosing to stay in Forney to shop instead of leaving the city.
The City of Terrell's February 2014 net payment was $822,126.87, up from $733,378.84 from February 2013 – a 12.1 percent increase. The City of Kaufman's February 2014 net payment was $173,084.21, down from $177,229.04 from February 2013 – a 2.33 percent decrease. The City of Crandall received a net payment of $43,052.85 in February 2014 which is up from $38,894.85 from February 2013 – a 10.69 percent increase.
