61 high school teams from across North Texas competed in the competition, according to Forney High School Team Advisor Chad Grace. Tyler “Grant” Gilbert, 17, and Zachary Turner, also 17, earned 3rd place with five bass weighed for a total of 18.41 pounds. Both Gilbert and Turner received $1,000 college scholarships.
“We had a pretty solid game plan going into the tournament,” said Gilbert. “On the morning of the tournament we fished Rowlett creek and caught four bass. Then we moved to an area near Interstate 30.”
Matthew Sprague and Zach McEnturff, of Wills Point, Texas, won the competition with five bass with a total weight of 30.69 pounds. The team caught two bass over nine pounds and the largest, 9.52 pounds, was a Lake Ray Hubbard Junior Angler record. They each received $3,000 college scholarships.
“Wills Point had a great day fishing,” said Gilbert congratulating them on the win. “Zach and I would also like to thank our advisor, Chad Grace. Without him, there would not be a bass fishing team from Forney High School.”
2nd place went to Marshall White and Justin White from Kaufman High School who caught a combined five bass which weighed 20.99 pounds. They each received $1,500 college scholarships.
The competition consists of high school teams of two fishers and a boat captain competing for the five heaviest bass. Team members can continue fishing after catching their bag limit of five and can replace a smaller catch with a heavier one.
Also weighing in from Kaufman County was Cody Benson and Collin Head from Crandall High School who caught a combined total of four bass for a total weight of 13.66 pounds which earned them 5th place at the competition. They each received $500 college scholarships.
A second Kaufman High School team captured 6th place with four bass caught weighing 10.61 pounds. The team consisted of fishers Nichole Howard and Lane Allen. Rounding off the top ten in the competition was another team from Crandall High School. Jason Brewer and Logan Woodcock caught two bass for a total of 5.76 pounds.
