According to Captain Sansom with the Terrell Police Department, “At about 3:03 p.m. the Terrell Police received a call from a man stating he wanted to shoot himself and that he had a gun to his chest.”
The Terrell Police Department arrived on scene within minutes where a white male was standing on his front porch with a weapon in the 100 block of Brush Creek Lane. Authorities then began negotiating with the man who police say is from Grand Prairie, Texas. The home on Brush Creek Lane belonged to his ex-wife, according to authorities.
Because the incident was only a few blocks away from the elementary school, it was placed on lockdown by the Terrell ISD Police Department as a precautionary measure. According to a news release from the Terrell Police Department, “school children were never at risk and the school was put on lockdown … as a precautionary measure.”
At 4:02 p.m., the Terrell Police Department had the man in custody without further incident. The man was transported to Terrell State Hospital for an evaluation.
A residence behind the man's home was also evacuated temporarily during the incident. The Kaufman County Sheriff's Office and the Texas Department of Public Safety assisted the Terrell Police Department.
