Nelson was a longtime Forney ISD and Criswell Elementary School librarian who recently passed away after a courageous battle with cancer. The faculty and staff of Criswell Elementary submitted the request to honor Nelson by naming the library in her name because the school was her home campus.
Nelson began her career in Forney ISD in 1992 and devoted more than 20 years of her life to the students and staff of the District. She was named the Criswell Elementary School Teacher of the Year in 2002 and became the District’s Elementary Library Coordinator in 2004. She was instrumental in opening seven district elementary libraries during the course of her career with Forney ISD.
Nelson was an active member of the former Forney Women’s Organization (FWO), which helped in the establishment of the Forney Public Library in 1991 which was located at 113 E. Main Street, Forney. In 1995, the Forney Public Library merged with the Forney High School Library and became the Ellen Brooks West Memorial Library.
“We would like to celebrate Susan’s passion for literature, love of children and years of dedicated service to Forney ISD by naming the library at Criswell Elementary, the Susan K. Nelson Library,” Principal Jeff Hutcheson wrote in a letter submitted to the FISD Board of Trustees requesting the renaming of the library.
The school plans to hold a dedication ceremony for the renaming of the library to the Susan K. Nelson Library during Children’s Book Week which is scheduled for the week of May 5, 2014.
