TERRELL, Texas – The Terrell Animal Shelter announced today, April 24, 2014, they would be closed to all incoming and outgoing animals for the next seven days after three cases of parvo viral interitis disease.

According to the City of Terrell Animal Shelter Veterinarian Dr. Russell New, three dogs were diagnosed with parvo in the last two weeks, which prompted the closure. All three were feral puppies picked up by the Animal Control Department.
If no new cases are reported during the seven day closure, Dr. New will allow new incoming animals during a second seven day period after a complete examination. If no new cases are detected during the second seven day period, the shelter will reopen to normal operations.
“This is largely a proactive measure and most prudent in order to preserve the integrity of our facility and the reputation of our animals,” said Terrell Police Chief Jody Lay who also serves as the Terrell Animal Shelter's director. “Parvo can spread so easily, we simply cannot afford to run the risk of not catching it and stopping it by taking these aggressive steps now.”
Officials expect the shelter to return to normal operations within two weeks. The shelter will also not be showing any dogs at the annual Terrell Jubilee, according to the shelter's Facbeook Page.
