Charlie Battery held a three day reunion in San Antonio and presented the scholarship to Murphy at the reunion banquet which honored former Battery Commander Colonel Harry K. Jowers who passed away on May 10, 2013. Jowers was buried at Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors.
Shortly after his death, battery members established a scholarship fund to recognize Col. Jowers for his outstanding leadership on the battlefield, his continued friendship with his former “troopers”, and for his service to his country.
Murphy was presented the scholarship by her grandfather, retired Command Sergeant Major Robert Murphy, Jimmy and Doris Moreno, and Don and Cecillia Hutsell. Murphy will graduate Forney High School in 2014 and will attend Texas A&M University to pursue a degree in marketing.
“C Battery members would like to express their gratitude to the 25th ID Association and its members for the funding and the awarding of the scholarships each year. The scholarships go to children and grandchildren of members of the 25th ID Association,” read a statement from 25th Infantry Division Scholarship Officer Bill Wood.
“We would also like to thank the many members of the Association who contribute the money on an annual basis that continues this important scholarship program,” said Wood. “We would like to wish Megan a very successful career in her chosen field.”
