The mobile home, in the 1600 block of County Road 133, was occupied by an elderly female and a home health care nurse when the fire began at approximately 2:25 p.m. – both were able to safely evacuate the home, according to officials.
The College Mound Fire Department requested and received mutual aid from Elmo, Kaufman, and Terrell. The departments were forced to fight the fire defensively from outside the home because of an abundance of fire and exploding ammunition and oxygen tanks inside the home. The mobile home had multiple additions and was fully involved when the College Mound Fire Department arrived on scene.
The elderly woman was treated at the scene by an East Texas Medical Center ambulance for difficulty breathing and did not require transport to the hospital.
“The nurse was able to safely evacuate the resident and herself before calling 911,” stated Van Sickle.
The Kaufman County Fire Marshal's Office is investigating the fire to determine a cause. The Red Cross was also on scene to assist the residents and provide rehab for firefighters.
