On May 16 at approximately 8:50 p.m., DPS and Kaufman County Sheriff’s deputies searched an area just west of the Heartland subdivision for two suspects who fled from DPS Troopers earlier, according to a DPS spokesperson.
The search was focused on High Country Lane where the road makes a sharp 90 degree turn – south of IH 20. High Country Lane connects to FM 741 in two places, once on the north side of IH 20 about two miles from the Forney city limits, and again on the south side of IH 20 near Heartland.
A DPS Trooper stopped the two suspects and, while running the suspect’s plates, the vehicle took off leading troopers on a short chase. The suspects then ditched the vehicle on eastbound IH 20 just before the High Country Lane overpass. The foot chase continued south up the interstate’s embankment where the suspects hid in the brush.
At approximately 9:15 p.m., authorities were able to locate and arrest one suspect who they believe to have been the driver. Authorities were aided in their search with the assistance of a Department of Public Safety helicopter and a K9 unit with the Kaufman County Sheriff’s Office.
Authorities were unable to locate the second suspect after searching the area. The search was called off at approximately 10:00 p.m. Because of the ongoing investigation, the spokesperson was unable to comment further as to why the chase began in the first place.
