The Forney Youth Football League is open to students of the Forney Independent School District from kindergarten through 6th grade. The league is divided into four teams based on what school your child attends: Lewis and Blackburn Elementary students register for the Chargers; Criswell, Smith and Crosby students for the Cowboys; Claybon and Johnson students for the Jackrabbits; and Rhea and Henderson students for the Red Raiders.
Kindergarten through 2nd grade flag football registration is $110 plus a $20 late registration fee. 3rd through 6th grade tackle football registration is $160 plus the $20 late registration fee. The registration fee covers organization fees, administration expenses, insurance, awards, game jersey and pants, and a 5x7 team photo but does not include cleats, socks, and mouth pieces which are required. Tackle football also requires helmets, shoulder pads, and pant pads.
Each team plays eight regular season games and will have two bye weeks. The FYFL will hold a two-week playoff series and will hold their championship game on November 8, 2014.
The FYFL also announced a two year deal with teams from Sunnyvale ISD. Sunnyvale ISD has also given the FYFL permission to use their football facility in Sunnyvale, Texas, to hold four regular season games with all other games being held at either Warren Middle School of Brown Middle School in Forney, Texas.
FYFL President Jason O'Neill expects the use of the Sunnyvale ISD football facility to save the league money in the 2014 season. “Currently FISD charges the FYFL per event at their stadiums and since we will have fewer games being played on FISD fields we should be able to negotiate a reduction in field usage fees,” stated O'Neill in a letter to parents.
The league also announced a change in their game times due to high temperatures in the summer. For the first four weeks of the season, from August 23 through September 13, flag football games will be played at 8:30 a.m., junior games at 10 a.m., and senior games at 11:30 a.m. The remaining six weeks of the season will be played at 3 p.m., 4:30 p.m., and 6:30 p.m., for flag, junior, and senior games, respectively.
“This move will help keep our participants and fans out of the late August and early September sun,” stated O'Neill who mentioned heat related illnesses caused by high temperatures during the first four games of the season. “We hope that this move will reduce and/or eliminate these issues.”
