Forney, Texas – On September 5, 2013, a Forney Police pursuit prompted the lockdown of Criswell Elementary in the Forney ISD. The lockdown only lasted approximately 20 minutes while police pursued a man who fled on foot after an attempted traffic stop in a neighborhood near the school.
At approximately 9:10 a.m., a Forney police officer pulled over a motorcyclist on Brazos Street. The man ditched the motorcycle and fled on foot in a northeastern direction towards Criswell Elementary.
The Forney Police Department contacted the school district who then placed Criswell in “hard shelter in place”. According to Forney ISD, all exterior doors were locked, no one was allowed to enter or exit the building, and students remained in the classrooms with the doors shut and locked.
Forney Police Department spokesperson Detective Clay said it was a precautionary measure and the suspect did not go any further than Bowie Street before he was caught and arrested. Bowie street is one block from Brazos where the suspect fled and is six streets from Criswell Elementary, approximately a quarter-mile away.
The Forney Police Department apprehended the suspect at approximately 9:30 a.m. and the school was once again notified and the lockdown status was lifted.
According to a release from Forney ISD, Criswell has resumed normal operation. “Forney ISD takes the safety and security of all students and staff very seriously. Criswell Elementary properly initiated and managed the Hard Shelter in Place during this situation,” states a notification sent by Forney ISD.
Suspect information was not immediately available from the police department but according to Forney ISD, they believe the suspect was involved in some sort of theft incident.
“Hard shelter in place” is one of the many drills each FISD campus conducts each year.
