After entering pleas of guilty on May 15, 2013, to two counts of armed robbery, Quinlan brothers Johnny Charles Butler, 45, and Robert Cleveland Butler, 44, were sentenced by U.S. District Judge Jorge A. Solis on September 4, 2013.
Johnny Charles Butler received a sentence of 35 years for two counts of armed bank robbery, one count of assaulting a federal officer and one count of using and carrying a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence. Robert Cleveland Butler received a sentence of 25 years for the same charges.
The brothers were arrested on August 2, 2012, following a standoff that lasted an hour and a half at their residence in Quinlan, Texas, during the execution of a federal search warrant. The pair was linked to three other bank robberies in the Dallas area plus the one in Forney and admitted they were planning a sixth robbery. The brothers robbed the Forney Bank of America twice, once on November 12, 2011, and again on May 18, 2012.
Documents filed in court indicate Johnny Butler told an informant the brothers entered the banks with guns drawn wearing ski masks and gloves. While Robert Butler held the bank employees and customers on the ground at gunpoint, Johnny Butler would jump over the teller’s counter to get the money. Thick Plexiglas has since been installed at the Bank of America location in Forney.
The brothers would then discard any dye packs or tracking devices while making their getaway in vehicles with license plates covered with cardboard.
