Lovejoy started right where they left off in Week 0. After scoring over 60 points in their season opener, Lovejoy’s potent offense struck quickly against the Forney Jackrabbits by putting 21 points on the board in the first quarter and 15 more in the second quarter. Forney didn’t put points on the board until a third-string quarterback threw a touchdown pass late in the third quarter. By then, the game was really no longer in doubt.
Sophomore quarterback Bowman Sells, who threw for over 400 yards in the opener, kept his numbers up by amassing 290 yards on a 13 for 18 passing effort in the first half. Those numbers include four touchdowns and one interception. Bowman connected on touchdown passes of 4, 45 and 23 yards, all in the first quarter. Sells then threw a 33 yard touchdown on the third play of the second quarter. The Jackrabbit defense then came alive and forced some stops and a missed field goal. But Sells capped off his evening with a 9-yard touchdown run of his own to increase Lovejoy’s lead to 36-0 going into halftime. Reportedly, Sells broke his collarbone at some point on that last drive and did not return in the second half.
Throughout the entire first half, the Jackrabbit offense struggled to mount much of an attack. Junior quarterback Jake Guercia was replaced on one drive by fellow Junior Cory Marr which resulted in a fumble after three plays. The first score of the night for the Jackrabbits did not come until the third quarter of the night when Sophomore Luke Skipper connected with David Burnett on a 37-yard touchdown pass with 1:30 left in the third quarter. Skipper added a rushing touchdown of his own on a 9-yard scramble. Marcus White was a special teams highlight film for the second week in a row. This week White had two kickoff returns of over 50 yards each that he almost broke for touchdowns.
Defensively, the Jackrabbits were paced by Junior Chazz Slatinsky and Senior Jonathan Bridger. After becoming severely dehydrated last week and not being able to finish the game, Bridger was on a mission for the Jackrabbits. He had several tackles for loss along with a couple of sacks and several big hits. Chazz Slatinsky roamed the defensive backfield for the Jackrabbits with his own brand of tough hitting and stellar defense. Slatinsky, another Junior, picked off three passes on the night to lead the defensive effort for Forney.
Final score: Lovejoy Leopards 45 to Forney Jackrabbits 13.
In the end, Lovejoy was just too much and the Jackrabbits will go into Homecoming week and their first home game of the season with a 1-1 record. Friday night will be Homecoming against the Corsicana Tigers at City Bank Stadium.
