Forney, Texas – Local Girl Scout Troop 3514 will hold a book fair at Crosby Elementary School on September 21, 2013, to benefit schools in Moore, Oklahoma, who were affected by tornadoes earlier this year.
On May 20, 2013, a mile-wide EF-5 tornado with winds in upwards of 210 miles per hour barreled through Moore, Oklahoma, and destroyed 1,150 homes and caused an estimated $2 billion in damages. The tornado was also responsible for 24 deaths and 237 injuries.
The girl scouts of Troop 3514 are working towards their Bronze Award and need to organize a community service project. The girls chose the book fair to help students and other girl scouts in Moore, OK, to rebuild their libraries after some of them were destroyed in the tornado.
The girl scouts symbolically chose Crosby Elementary School as the location for the book fair because, last year, Crosby Elementary School was also struck by an EF-3 tornado that touched down in Forney, Texas, on April 3, 2013.
The girls will also be given an opportunity to meet other girl scouts from Moore, Oklahoma. “The girls are really excited about this project,” said troop leader Desiree Hoover. “The girls have been very motivated and instrumental in bringing all of the pieces of this puzzle together.”
The book fair will be from 9:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. at Crosby Elementary School located at 495 Diamond Creek Drive, Forney, Texas 75126, and will be sponsored by Scholastic Books who will match one-for-one any books donated at the book fair.
