Zanata's future plans in Forney hinge on alcohol variance
Forney, Texas – The future of Zanata in downtown Forney hinges upon the approval of a private club variance by the Forney City Council to sell alcohol. Currently, Zanata would not be able to sell alcoholic beverages at their restaurant because it is located across the street from a Forney Independent School District campus - a violation of distance requirements set forth in the City of Forney Code of Ordinances and the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Code.
According to Zanata's performance agreement with the Forney Economic Development Corporation which was approved by the Forney City Council on Tuesday night, November 5, 2013, the city council has six months from the effective date of the agreement to approve the variance. Zanata must first apply with the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission for an alcohol license before the city council can approve a variance.

If not approved, the agreement provides Zanata the opportunity to terminate the agreement in writing. The Forney Economic Development Corporation would then be liable to refund any incurred expenses of Zanatas in acquiring a TABC alcohol license and any fees associated with the variance.

A timeline of events for Zanata reveals discussion concerning the variance would likely be held in January or February of 2014. If the variance is approved, building permits and construction would then begin in February.

The Forney Economic Development Corporation recently passed a $2 million bond which includes $375,000 allocated to finish-out work at 213 and 215 Bois D'Arc Street in downtown Forney which would serve as Zanata's future home. The bonds were sold and funded on October 22, 2013, and are available for disbursement on December 10, 2013.

Zanata also operates restaurants in downtown Rockwall, Texas, and downtown Plano, Texas. Its Plano location recently experienced a fire and is closed until further notice.
