inForney.com has learned of the Texas State Board of Pharmacy's decision in August of 2013 to revoke Kristal McKown's pharmacy tech license. McKown was employed by Forney's CVS Pharmacy prior to the revocation.
McKown was involved in an early morning accident on January 22, 2013, where she drove her car off the road in the 300 block of Spruce Trail and struck a mailbox. Several blocks later in the Trails of Chestnut Meadow neighborhood, McKown crashed her SUV into the front of a home in the 500 block of Madrone Trail.
After the accident, McKown was charged by the Forney Police Department with two state jail felony charges of driving while intoxicated with a child under 15 years of age, a misdemeanor charge of possession of a controlled substance, penalty group three under 28 grams, and a misdemeanor charge of striking a fixture/highway landscape costing more than $200.
The Kaufman County District Attorney's Office filed a motion to dismiss both state jail felony DWI charges on November 14, 2013, which was granted by Kaufman County Court at Law Judge Dennis Jones. The other charges are still pending.
At the time of McKown's arrest, police found various quantities of zolpidem, alprazolam, hydrocodone, and phentermine tablets, according to the Texas Board of Pharmacy's board order.
According to the order, McKown admitted to a loss prevention officer at CVS pharmacy that, from approximately June 2010 until November 2012, she “took without authorization and unlawfully possessed approximately 200 hydrocodone/APAP 10/325 mg tablets, 60 phentermine 37.5 tablets, 90 alprazolam 1 mg tablets, and 2 alprazolam orally disintegrating tablets for her personal use. Subsequently, Ms. McKown was terminated from her position at CVS Pharmacy.”
However, on or about May 13, 2013, the CVS drugstore in Forney reported to the Texas State Board of Pharmacy many more drugs were missing from the store due to employee pilferage including 2,761 hydrocodone/APAP 10/325 mg tablets, 1,564 alprazolam 1 mg tablets, and 20 phentermine 37.5 mg tablets.
The agreed board order goes on to state that McKown has “developed an incapacity that prevents her from practicing as a pharmacy technician trainee with reasonable skill, competence, and safety to the public.”
Despite her admission of guilt to the CVS loss prevention officer as stated in the agreed board order, the order stipulates McKown “neither admits nor denies the truth of the matters”. It further orders McKown to no longer practice as a pharmacy technician trainee or a pharmacy technician in this state or have access to prescription drugs during the period of the revocation of her license and shall surrender any renewal certificate and personal identification card.
The agreed board order was accepted and signed by McKown along with Gay Dodson, R.Ph. Executive Director/Secretary, and Kerstin E. Arnold, General Counsel, Texas State Board of Pharmacy.
