The North Central Texas Council of Governments regional 9-1-1 program has recognized Kaufman County dispatchers as the 2013 Team of the Year.
The team was nominated for their exemplary handling of an emergency call on April 27, 2013, which involved an active shooter, Kaufman County deputies, and Texas Department of Public Safety troopers. “The dispatchers obtained vital information from the callers and relayed the information without delay to the deputies and troopers responding to the call,” states a press release from the Kaufman County Sheriff's Office.
“Dispatch then notified Emergency Medical Services and First Responders to stage in the area,” continues the release. “When deputies arrived on scene they immediately came under gunfire. The suspect fled the scene as deputies took cover and waited for additional units to arrive. During this time, dispatch continuously relayed information to the deputies received through callers in reference to the suspect’s location. Deputies and troopers located the suspect who then displayed and pointed a gun at them. The suspect was subsequently shot and later died. The deputies and troopers at the incident walked away with minor injuries. “
The team receiving the 2013 Team of the Year award includes Kaufman County Sheriff's Office Communication Officers Corporal Laura Milligan, Jaime Lambeth, Jenny Willoughby, and Rebecca Law.
“Sgt. Heather Jackson nominated her shift because she believed that as result of the dispatchers working as a team, obtaining accurate and vital information, ensuring that EMS and First Responders were in the immediate area and remaining calm during this extremely stressful situation, that they saved lives,” state the press release.
Each year the North Central Texas Council of Governments regional 9-1-1 program recognizes individuals in the areas of Telecommunicator of the Year, Team of the Year, Supervisor of the Year, and 9-1-1 Professional Award at their November Annual Meeting.
