Forney, Texas – The Cleveland Browns announced this morning the signing of Forney High School graduate and NFL free-agent Caleb Hanie to their roster.
In 2002, Hanie led the Forney High School Jackrabbits to the Class 3A Division I State Semifinals where they were defeated by the eventual state champions Everman, 21-14. In 2003, Hanie again led the team deep into the playoffs – this time dropping out with a loss against Gainesville in the quarterfinals, 24, 21.
Hanie began his career in the NFL in 2008 after signing on with the Chicago Bears as an undrafted free-agent out of Colorado State. Hanie eventually made his way into the backup quarterback position for Jay Cutler.
After not re-signing with the Bears after the 2011 season, Hanie joined the Denver Broncos for the 2012 season as one of Peyton Manning's backups. From there, Hanie signed a one-year contract with the Batlimore Ravens in April of 2013 before being released in August of 2013.
Hanie practiced with the Cleveland Browns on November 26, 2013. After that practice the Browns signed Dallas Cowboys practice squad quarterback Alex Tanney. The two could be competing for game time in next week's Sunday matchup against the New England Patriots because the current Brown's quarterback lineup is out on concussions.
According to a press release from the Cleveland Browns, Hanie has appeared in 10 career games in the NFL with four starts. In those games, Hanie completed 59 of 116 passes (50.9 percent) for 679 yards with three touchdowns and 10 interceptions.
Hanie completed his college career at Colorado State University fifth in Mountain West history with 39 touchdown passes and seventh with 6,523 total yards.
Hanie's sister, Samantha, recently returned to Forney to teach math and athletics at North Forney High School. Samantha also graduated from Forney High School.
