Third grade Crosby student publishes first book; 'Emily's Sock Monkey: A Great Find'
Forney, Texas – Crosby Elementary School third-grader Emily Hough published her first children's book and, on Thursday morning, presented 20 copies of the book to the Forney Independent School District at the Ellen Brooks West Memorial Library at Forney High School.

Emily co-authored the book titled Emily's Sock Monkey: A Great Find with local writer Sherri Thornhill as part of her continued sock monkey campaign for Texas Scottish Rite Hospital (TSRH) in Dallas, Texas. Emily was diagnosed with Juvenile Dermatomyositisa and underwent surgery at TSRH when she and her family decided to make sock monkeys for children scheduled and recovering from surgery.

Emily's inspiration for the book came from the sock monkey campaign and teaches the importance of appreciation, laughter, and “paying it forward.” The book is about Emily using her saved allowance to buy a torn and raggedy sock monkey who Emily learns can talk to her.

The book takes place in Forney, Texas, and local landmarks are displayed within the illustrations of the book. The donations to Forney ISD were made possible by contributions from Forney ISD School Board President Keith Bell who donated to help fund the book's printing. Each elementary school in Forney ISD will receive two books in addition to the two books donated to the Ellen Brooks West Memorial Library.

Hough and Thornhill utilized gofundme.com, an online fundraising website, to help raise the funds needed to print and publish the book. Several hundred copies of the book will be donated to local charities and non-profit organizations including Texas Scottish Rite Hospital in the name of individuals who donated to the gofundme.com campaign for the book.

“A total of thirty-percent of the proceeds from the sale of the books will be divided among three charities; the Texas Scottish Rite Hospital, the Make-A-Wish Foundation and CureJM. All of these charities have played a major role in helping Hough with her fight against JDM. Hough was a Make-A-Wish recipient this year and received a Disney Cruise,” according to a Forney ISD press release.
