Tanksley was killed in the line of duty on Monday, February 10, 2014, while working an accident on top of the icy Spur 408 bridge over Interstate Highway 20 in Dallas, Texas. A vehicle lost control and struck another vehicle which pushed Tanksley over the edge of the bridge.

Services for Tanskley will be held on Monday, February 17, 2014, at the Terrell ISD Performing Arts Center at 10 a.m. Hundreds of firefighters from all over the country are expected to attend Tanksley's service to pay tribute and to honor a fire service brother whose life was cut short way too early.

The Mabank Police Department and Kaufman County Precinct 4 Constable's Office provided the escort for Tanksley from Seagoville, Texas, to Mabank, Texas, on Highway 175 at approximately 5:30 p.m. The Kaufman Fire Department, Kemp Fire Department, and other county first responders were positioned on top of bridges along the route including at intersection closures in Mabank for the procession.

"It was our honor to be able to bring DFD firefighter Scott Tanksley home today. Please keep the Tanksley and Dallas Fire Rescue family in your prayers," reads a statement on the Mabank Police Department's Facebook Page.

The Terrell ISD Performing Arts Center is located at 400 Poetry Road in Terrell, Texas.
