The accident occurred at approximately 1:10 a.m. near the Farm-to-Market (FM) 548 exit on U.S. Highway 80 and caused the service road to be temporarily closed while crews worked to removed the vehicle, trailer, and debris.
The SUV, bearing Oklahoma license plates, and trailer separated after overturning. The trailer came to a rest on its side inbetween the highway and the south service road. The SUV continued to roll over the service road and came to a rest upright on the south service road shoulder.
Several of the vehicle's occupants were injured in the rollover accident and made their way to Lake Pointe Medical Center prior to emergency crews arriving on scene. The driver was later transported to Lake Pointe Medical Center with minor injuries.
The icy road conditions were to blame for several other minor accidents and travel delays on Tuesday evening. Black ice was reported on the U.S. Highway 80 overpass at FM 548 which caused several vehicles and 18-wheelers to stall while climbing the hill up to the bridge.
The same conditions were reported on eastbound U.S. Highway 80 near County Road 212 where there is another steep hill.
In Kaufman County, Forney ISD along with Terrell ISD, Crandall ISD, Kaufman ISD, Kemp ISD, and Scurry-Rosser ISD reported school closure on Monday, March 3, 2014, due to unsafe driving conditions.
