KAUFMAN COUNTY, Texas – Kaufman County District Judges Chitty and Tygrett have reappointed Kaufman County Auditor Karen Cooper as the acting auditor to an additional 30-day extension pending a Texas Rangers investigation.

An appointment was expected this morning as Cooper's current 30-day extension was set to expire. Allegations against Cooper prompted the investigation by the Texas Rangers last month. Cooper's full appointment will likely be determined by the findings of that investigation – the details of which are not being released at this time.
County officials were expected to release additional information concerning the investigation last month after the first extension was granted but the Texas Rangers were unable to conclude their investigation.
The miscellaneous order entered May 7, 2014, reads as follows:
The District Judges, having the duty to appoint the County Auditor pursuant to Texas Local Government Code §84.002, and not having completed the investigation and consideration required by §84.006(b), and having previously authorized one thiry-day extension of her term of office, hereby authorize Karen Cooper to serve as Acting County Auditor for a period of thirty more days from the expiration of her current term of office or until such time as the District Court Judges shall appoint a County Auditor pursuant to §84.003 for the next two-year term.
