North Forney sophomore Myra Castillo's pastel entitled “Cosmos” was selected as the winning art piece in United State Representative Jeb Hensarling's District 5. Castillo's artwork will hang at the United States Capital for a year in the Congressional Art Competition exhibit.
In June, Castillo will be flown to Washington D.C. to attend a ribbon cutting ceremony for this year's exhibit. The exhibit at the Capital will also feature the artwork of the other artists representing state districts nationwide.
Last year, North Forney's Yvonne Almorado won with her artwork entitled “Fall in the Courtyard” – a piece which depicted the courtyard at North Forney High School in the fall.
“Each spring, the Congressional Institute sponsors a nationwide high school visual art competition to recognize and encourage artistic talent in the nation and in each congressional district. Since the competition began in 1982, more than 650,000 high school students have participated," according to the United States House of Representatives' website.
