The Relay for Life will begin tonight at 7 p.m. at the Forney Community Park. Event organizers say the event isn't just for those people on a team but, instead, the whole community is invited to celebrate the survivors of cancer, remember the loved ones they have lost, and to inspire a community committed to fight against cancer.
Relay for Life team members will take turns walking the course around the park. Food, music, games, and entertainment are also available with live band performances from Kyle Cooper, Dale Riley – Last Train South, Matt Linsdale, 3:16, The Has Bands, and Dennis Boykin.
Opening ceremonies will begin shortly after 7 p.m. followed by a special Survivors Lap and Caregivers Lap. The Survivors Lap is the first lap at the relay which allows all cancer survivors to take the first lap around the park. The Caregivers Lap is the second lap of the relay which recognizes those who have given care to cancer patients.
After dark, in the Luminaria Ceremony, candles will be lit and placed inside personalized brown paper bags along the relay path to honor loved ones who have lost their battle to cancer or who are currently fighting cancer.
The relay will conclude with a Fight Back Ceremony after all the relayers take one final lap and pledge to continue raising awareness for cancer research, treatments, and prevention.
Forney Community Park is located at 241 South FM 548, Forney, Texas, 75126.
Note to relay event attendees: The gates at the Forney Community Park will close at midnight Friday night, May 16, 2014, and won't re-open until 5:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 17, 2014.
