FORNEY, Texas – The North Texas Municipal Water District (NTMWD) is calling for its north Texas member cities and customers to turn off their automatic sprinkling systems and, instead, operate them manually.

According to NTMWD Executive Director Thomas Kula, irrigation and automatic sprinkler systems account for more than 50 percent of water usage this time of year. Operating the systems manually will not only drastically reduce water usage but will also bring most customers into compliance who are currently watering once a week while Stage 3 watering restrictions are in place – which restricts watering to once every two weeks.
Kula also says that even with the water supply from Lake Texoma coming back on line, Stage 4 water restrictions are likely to take effect later this summer, which does not allow outside watering at all, unless we begin taking water reduction measures immediately. Kula estimates a reduction in 15 to 20 percent of water usage is needed throughout the summer to extend available water supplies until drought conditions ease.
“We think you all agree that it's most important to preserve our water supplies to maintain adequate supplies for our highest priorities - public health, sanitation, and firefighting capabilities,” Kula said in a release. “If Stage 4 restrictions were necessary, they would result in greater impacts than just no outdoor watering, potentially hurting many businesses as well as the local economy.”
Despite recent heavy rain events this past month, reservoir levels are still low due to an extended drought that has many local area lakes well below conservation levels including Lake Lavon which is 11.35 feet low, Lake Texoma at 8.21 feet low, Lake Tawakoni at 8.09 feet low, and Lake Ray Hubbard at 7.06 feet low.
“We will all get through this together, siad Kula. “This region is known for its unity and cooperation.”
“The District was created with the vision of 'Regional Service Through Unity' and that motto stands strong today and will for the future.,” he said. “We will be tested this summer as it will be tough to stay within the guidelines, but when all understand what's at stake, we know you will do the right thing.”
