TERRELL, Texas – The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) will hold a public hearing on Tuesday, June 10, 2014, to discuss upcoming improvements to Spur 557 which will make way for thousands of acres of planned development in the area.

The hearing for the project, estimated at $4.8 million, will be held at the City of Terrell Service Center Training Room at 400 Industrial Boulevard from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. An open house will be held prior to the public hearing to allow for questions and public review of exhibits.
City officials held a grand opening ceremony at Las Lomas Parkway last month. The parkway and proposed improvements will provide the needed infrastructure for the Las Lomas planned development which consists of residential, retail, and industrial development between Spur 557 and Interstate 20 with additional development south of Interstate 20.
The land also sits adjacent to proposed development to the east which includes the Crossroads at Terrell, the 36-acre Terrell Market Center which includes the super-sized travel center Buc-ee's, and a 52-acre tract of land owned by Baylor Health Care Systems. TxDOT has already begun construction on FM 148 for these planned developments – expanding FM 148 from two lanes to four lanes between Spur 557 and Interstate 20.
According to TxDOT officials, the purpose of the hearing is to discuss social, economic, and environmental effects of the proposed improvements on Spur 557 from Las Lomas Parkway to Farm-to-Market (FM) 148, approximately 1.3 miles.
“The proposed project would construct a new frontage road along eastbound Spur 557 with entrance and exit ramps and replace the existing Las Lomas Parkway bridge,” according to a TxDOT release. Proposals for the bridge indicate eight divided lanes of travel – six for passover and two as dedicated left turn lanes in each direction – and curbs, sidewalks, and bridge railing.
TxDOT officials say the project could begin as early as November 2014 and end in November 2015.
Additional information:
Approximately 2,500 feet of Spur 557 pavement would be widened to accommodate the proposed ramps and auxiliary lane between the ramps. The proposed frontage road would consist of one 12-foot-wide inside and one 14-foot-wide outside lane.
Approximately 3.49 acres of new right of way is required from Las Lomas Parkway to FM 148 along the proposed frontage road and approximately 1.18 acres of easements are required for construction activities and culvert extensions.
