KAUFMAN COUNTY, Texas – Van Zandt County Jail inmates who were being temporarily housed in the Kaufman County Jail will begin to be transported back to Van Zandt County, according to jail officials.

35 Van Zandt County jail inmates were originally transported to the Kaufman County Jail for contract hold after inmates discovered a method to compromise the high security locking systems within the facility on June 30, 2014. The contractor responsible for the locking mechanisms has made repairs and inmates held in Kaufman, Henderson, and Upshur Counties are being returned.
The issue effected confinement cells in high security sections of the Van Zandt County Jail facility as well as ingress and egress access to the building, according to Van Zandt County Sheriff Michael Ray.
No escapes or incidents were reported from the jail as a result of the compromise. “Because there are many very dangerous inmates currently confined in our county jail, the alertness of jail staff most certainly prevented a very dangerous situation from becoming a potentially deadly situation,” Ray said after learning of the compromise.
The repaired locks passed an inspection by the Texas Commission on Jail Standards on Thursday, July 10, 2014.
