Puppy recovering from surgery after being injured on Kaufman County road
KAUFMAN COUNTY, Texas – A 7-week-old heeler puppy found injured on Farm-to-Market (FM) 2727 in Kaufman County is recovering after three-hour orthopaedic surgery in McKinney, Texas, on Friday.

The puppy, named Charlee, was found on Tuesday night, July 22, 2014, in the middle of the road by a Good Samaritan – described as a young woman. Several motorists had already driven around Charlee – presumed dead – when the woman stopped, rolled down her window, and noticed Charlee lift her head – still alive but suffering from broken hind legs.

After not being able to identify the puppy's owner at nearby residences, the woman took the puppy to her boyfriend's house where his grandmother made contact with a local animal rescue – Furry Friendzy Animal Rescue and Wildlife Rehabilitation in Kaufman, Texas.

Charlee was taken to a veterinary clinic in Kaufman, Texas, for an after-hours exam that same night. Charlee then stayed overnight at a Furry Friendzy volunteer's home and underwent additional exams and x-rays on Wednesday, according to Furry Friendzy Director Pylar Pinkston.

On Thursday, Charlee was taken to King Animal Clinic in McKinney, Texas, where she underwent surgery on Friday with Dr. Robert Means who donated his time and the cost of the orthopeadic surgery which involved the use of pins and screws, according to Pinkston.

Dr. Means wasn't available when we called this afternoon but we spoke with King Animal Clinic Veterinary Technician Justin Marksberry who described Charlee's injuries. “Both back legs broke in the exact same spot at the top of the femur where they start at the knee,” he said.

“Charlee's current condition is great,” said Pinkston who said the surgery took approximately three hours. “She has a healthy appetite, has gone outside to use the restroom, and was able to use her hind legs with assistance.”

Veterinarians and Pinkston expect Charlee to make a full recovery. Charlee is expected to be released from the clinic next Tuesday and ready for adoption.

Over 60 individuals have inquired about adopting Charlee already, states Pinkston. Furry Friendzy is processing three completed adoption applications and will conduct several different reference checks and interviews with the applicants.
